What do healthy nails look like?

Sunny is a high-energy Australian Cattle Dog mix. Because she runs regularly at high speed, her nails stay naturally and properly worn down. She only needs a quick tip now and then—not much else.

Take a look at the side profile of her nails—they’re straight with plenty of clearance from the ground.

If you check the underside, you’ll see her nail beds are exposed and not fully enclosed in a tube-like structure.

Now check your own dog’s nails. From the side, do they lift cleanly off the ground? Are the undersides open or completely enclosed?

Muffins gets regular full grooms at the salon, but even so, nails can still become overgrown. Nail trimming often isn’t the focus of a grooming appointment due to time constraints, typically just five minutes for a quick, straight-across trim.

In the before photo, can you see how the nail curves when it’s overgrown? The underside is fully enclosed, which is also a sign that the nails haven’t been properly maintained.

At PawPup we take our time, however long it takes to get the job done right. Appointments average around 30 minutes. Not only are the tips trimmed, but we also address the underside of the nails.

In the after photo, you’ll notice the dark area is no longer encased in a hard shell. The soft tissue of the quick is now exposed and vulnerable, but it will shrink and reharden into a protective casing. This process helps restructure the nail to grow straight, creating ground clearance and improving the overall alignment of the paw.
