Last night, Mylo called an emergency meeting regarding an unprovoked ramming incident by Nacho.

This morning, Nacho is still not sorry. He is currently in time-out reflecting on his violent choices and considering whether headbutting senior management is really the kind of energy he wants to bring to the workplace.

So far, there has been no remorse.

MEET THE MISHPUHA: MYLO
Mylo is, quite simply, the handsomest ram who ever rammed. He came to us after his previous owners sold off their herd. Everyone wanted the sheep, but nobody wanted the ram. Boo. Hiss. Their loss. Because this handsome fella brings all the ewes to the yard. All the ladies are head over hooves for Mylo. And honestly, who could blame them?

Mylo is a gentle, sweet soul who adores belly rubs and head scritches, especially right between his horns in that impossible-to-reach spot. Right now, Mylo is battling an infection in his jaw and needs our help. It’s hard to believe that this magnificent boy has never had a sponsor, but he could really use one now.

PUMPKIN SMASH OPEN FARM! 🎃
Got leftover pumpkins? Perfect. Your front porch decor just got its second career as animal enrichment. Bring the whole family out to Promised Land for a fall afternoon filled with happy animals, colourful leaves, warm apple cider and the deeply satisfying experience of absolutely demolishing a pumpkin for a rescued pig. Bring your uncarved, unpainted pumpkins and give them the send-off they deserve. Smash them, toss them and watch the residents descend like they haven’t been fed in six months.

While you’re here:
🍁 Take a walk through the forest and admire the fall colours before winter turns everything beige
🐐 Explore the farm and meet the residents, many of whom will immediately assess whether you have more snacks
🎃 Smash pumpkins for the animals: destruction is wholesome
☕ Warm up with apple cider and treats
🐷 Watch pigs demonstrate why table manners are wildly overrated

MEET THE MISHPUHA: RED🐴

Red is one of the originals. A Quarter Horse with a heart of gold, Red arrived at Promised Land in 2018 at the age of 18. Before sanctuary, he had been a barrel racer in Texas. Somewhere along the way, a terrible trailer accident left him severely lame and by the time he came to us, he was also dealing with heaves, arthritis and painfully thin soles. Thankfully, Red turned out to be just about the best patient a horse could be. Gentle, trusting and endlessly sweet, he has accepted every treatment, every hoof appointment and every indignity of getting older with the quiet grace that is so completely Red. If you’ve been to one of our Open Farm Days, you’ve probably seen him near the pond, head down in the grass, peacefully grazing while dozens of humans mill around him.

Now well into his senior years, Red needs a little more help staying comfortable. He gets extra grain to keep the weight on, a warm blanket through our Canadian winters and red light therapy and massages three times a week from our wonderful volunteer Judy. Around here, retirement comes with room service and a spa package (for all non human animals)😉

Red has given enough of his life to humans. These years belong to him.

And right now, Red needs a sponsor. Sponsorship helps us provide the feed, farrier care, medications, supplements and extra comforts that keep this beautiful old cowboy feeling his best.

Horses don’t fix us. They remind us how to heal. Maybe that’s why being near a horse can feel like coming home to a part of ourselves we didn’t realize needed tending.

Please stop buying mystery puppies from strangers on Kijiji ‼️

Meet Ryder. He’s fluffy, ridiculously adorable, approximately 12 weeks old and currently believes grass, butterflies and his own tail are worthy opponents. He’s also blissfully unaware that humans have a remarkable talent for making terrible decisions on behalf of dogs. Ryder was sold as a Goldendoodle. Then, when puppyhood became… well… puppyhood, he was given up. (Incoming rant in 3…2…1…)

Can we normalize saying this out loud:
Buying puppies from backyard breeders doesn’t rescue them. It funds the next litter. Every sale tells irresponsible breeders, ‘Great job! Let’s do that again.’ Dogs are not Amazon purchases with a return policy. They chew your shoes. They have accidents. They wake you up. They cost money. They shed (yes, even the hypoallergenic ones usually leave something behind). And then, if we’re lucky, they spend the next 10 to 15 years loving you more than anything else on earth.

Thankfully, Ryder’s story is taking a much happier turn. He has officially joined Project SpiritDog, our foster program run in partnership with Spiritleaf Campbellford, where dogs get a soft landing while they wait for the families they truly deserve. Ryder is being fostered with another one of our rescue alumni, Aruba and we think it’s going to end as another epic foster fail 😉

🚨But we need your help! Every foster home opens the door for another dog with nowhere else to go. No foster homes means no room to save the next Ryder. So if you’ve been thinking about fostering, now’s your chance. We’ll help every step of the way. You supply the love, the patience, the fenced backyard and maybe hide your favourite shoes for a little while.

Over the next little while, I’m going to introduce you to the colourful cast of characters who call Promised Land home. Each one has a story, a unique personality and a reason they stole our hearts. Welcome to Meet the Mishpuha.

At 24 years old, Gloria (aka Morning Gloria) the potbellied pig is our oldest resident and, quite frankly, she’s earned the right to be a little opinionated. Potbellied pigs typically live 15 to 20 years. Gloria is 24 and every day with her feels like a little gift, and we’re determined to make every one of them count. Unlike many of our rescues, Gloria had a loving home. She was deeply cared for by her hooman and had a piggy best friend. But after her friend passed away, Gloria wasn’t quite herself anymore. Her owner made the heartbreaking but compassionate decision to let her come here so she could spend her golden years surrounded by other pigs. Sometimes the greatest act of love is knowing when someone needs more than we alone can give.

These days Gloria moves a little slower. Arthritis has made her tiny legs stiff and being the smallest pig means she’s no match at mealtime. So every day she gets her medication and enjoys a private dining experience where nobody steals her food. (In other words, she’s basically living the retirement dream.)

When the cold Canadian winter rolls around, she’s spoiled with extra straw, a cozy heat source and a bed she rarely ventures far from. Honestly… I can relate.

Gloria has become our sweet little granny. She asks for very little, but she deserves absolutely everything.
