Our feline family members provide us endless hours of entertainment and love but some of their behavioural "quirks" (such as aggression, fearfulness, furniture scratching, etc) can be very frustrating and difficult to manage. Our upcoming webinar โ€œCommon Feline Behavioural Problems with Dr. Jacklyn Ellisโ€ will arm you with a better understanding of the reasons why these behaviours emerge, and provide strategies for reducing them in your home!

Dr. Jacklyn Ellis is the Manager, Feline Behaviour, Rehabilitation and Enrichment Programs at the Toronto Humane Society. Prior to joining THS, Dr. Ellis served as Nestlรฉ Purinaโ€™s leading authority on feline behaviour in her role as a Behaviour Scientist in their research and development division. She earned her PhD in Animal Welfare at the Atlantic Veterinary College, University of Prince Edward Island, where she conducted research on methods for reducing stress in shelter cats. Her work has been published widely in p*er reviewed journals and she has presented at many national and international conferences, particularly on feline stress and elimination behaviour. She is currently in the process of writing a chapter on feline behavioural assessment for a new edition of the leading textbook on the behaviour and welfare of shelter animals.

During these difficult and unprecedented times, it's important to acknowledge the impact that our increased presence at home has on our cats. They may become more affectionate, more aloof, or develop new behaviours that we may not understand on the surface. Remember that our sudden-onset continued presence could disrupt our cat's normal activities. For example, cats may suddenly become more active at night when they hadn't been before, they don't nap as often or in their usual places, or maybe their eating habits have changed. This may be attributed to the loss of human-free, fully cat-mode time. In our current situation where we are home all the time, they may be more hesitant to display natural behaviours knowing there are always people around. Try offering more wand toy play sessions, short but frequent throughout the day to encourage confidence in your presence. Short (max. 2 min) play sessions are ideal and most accurate to a real hunt, and the more short bouts of play throughout the day the better! This seemingly mundane activity could help everyone adapt to being together all the time with very little effort from us.

Please don't hesitate to contact us with any questions! We all need to take care of each other during these trying times, and we are here for you and your cat!
