🐶🐱 Cats and dogs don’t just “figure it out” on their own… they learn it.
🤝 With the right structure, clear communication, and consistent supervision, even animals with very different instincts can learn how to coexist, play appropriately, and respect each other’s space.
🐿️Foxy does have a prey drive. That didn’t magically disappear. What changed is her understanding.
☝️Through clear training (including e-collar work), she’s learned that small animals are not food, and how to stay calm and gentle around them 🐾
⚠️Safe interactions don’t happen by chance
They happen because humans step in, guide, and advocate for both animals every step of the way.
🐾Respectful play is taught, not assumed 💡

☃️Small dogs can absolutely enjoy winter walks too.
☝️They just need the right gear to keep them warm.
My recommendations are:
🏂Full snowsuits that cover all four legs help retain body heat. (Amazon and shein have GREAT options for pretty cheap prices. Just beware that Shein doesn't allow returns on dog stuff).
ℹ️ Snoods protect ears, neck, and chest from wind and cold (I use human leg warmers from the dollar store).
🥾When temperatures drop below -14°C, boots are often necessary to protect paws from frostbite, ice, and salt. 👉In this video, my dog is wearing boots from — great for dogs of all sizes. When fitted correctly, they stay on securely and don’t cause discomfort or restrict movement.
🥶Cold weather doesn’t have to mean staying inside; dress appropriately and winter walks can stay safe and enjoyable!

🐕Balto and Foxy are the CUTEST pair, but don't think this just happened all on its own.
🐾Having more than one dog in a household often requires strict rules and boundaries around how the dogs interact and what resources they need to share.
🙅‍♂️Just like children, leaving them to their own devices would likely create one bully and the other bullied.
🏡If you want your dogs to thrive in a household with other dogs, it's vital to make sure you are the one letting them know what is and isn't acceptable behaviour.
👎Do not just 'let the dogs figure it out'. More often than not this will eventually lead to fights down the road.
ℹ️If you're unsure what is and isn't acceptable in dog play and behavior, contact a reputable trainer who has a good reputation in dealing with dog behavior and behavior modification.

🍂End of Fall Vibes🍂
👍Everything is going super well with Balto and his training progress.
🥰As you can see here, he's getting big, and he and Foxy are thick as thieves.
💂While he might be super early in starting to guard, we chose him because we wanted a protective dog. It will take a little time for him to learn that he needs to look to us for guidance before acting on his urges to protect.
🐾I look forward to continuing on this journey with him.

⚠️You are not alone - Even dog trainers can have problems with behavior issues with their dogs.
🐕 A few weeks ago at around 5 months old, Balto started displaying signs of reactivity and protective behavior. While this is pretty early then when we typically will see this come about, it's something we already knew was coming, because when we picked him up at 10 weeks, we already saw some hints of these behaviors (It's also honestly why we chose him).
🐾Since I'm a dog trainer, it's not super concerning to me, and I know that I'll be able to get it under control. But for those of you who are struggling with these kinds of behaviors, just know that it is pretty normal for these things to come about.
ℹ️ I want you to know that there are solutions to this issue, and it can be solved. All you need to do is find a professional who will know how to help you solve these problems. Typically these are balance trainers who use a balanced approach to dog training, not just a positive only approach.
