Moving your indoor seedlings to the great outdoors is a big step! Wait until they have at least six true leaves, then "harden them off" by gradually increasing their outdoor time over a week, and then plant them in the ground. Keep a close eye on that Toronto forecast; if it dips below -4°C at any time, make sure to protect your greens with a frost blanket or cloche. Follow along to see our Grow Veggies students putting these tips into practice throughout the season.

This Sunday (April 26th), we’ll be hosting a table at EcoFair Toronto as one of our seed pick-up days for Food Up Front . The event is free to attend, and will be held at Evergreen Brickworks for the first time. Come stop by our booth and bring your gardening questions!

p.s Fun fact! Vinyse co-led the EcoFair Organizing Committee for 7 years, and Derek coordinated exhibitors and led logistics. It’s an event that we loved volunteering for, and it’s near and dear to our hearts!

Don't wait for the hotter days of spring to start your garden! Planting your cool-weather vegetables now ensures a harvest before the sweltering summer heat takes over. Pro tip: cover your soil with a dark tarp or mulch for at least a week before sowing to give those seeds a warm welcome. Check out the link in our profile for our mini guide to cool crops.

The secret to a bountiful vegetable patch is all in the soil! Right now is the perfect time to test your soil pH to see if it falls in the ideal 6.5 to 7.0 range. If you’re dealing with heavy Toronto clay, incorporating compost now will prevent re-compacting and add vital nutrients. Be sure to take a soil sample at root-depth, which is approx 4” below the surface. Click the link in our profile to read our mini guide on soil testing.

Homestead T.O. is so excited to be partnering with Transition Toronto on Food Up Front this year! 👩🏻‍🌾👨🏼‍🌾

Our full-season Grow Veggies program provides students with hands-on learning at our urban farm in Downsview Park, and a share of the harvest! We’re on a mission to help build resilience in Toronto by getting people’s hands in the soil through our Grow Veggies program, free gardening resources, and now free seeds and growing tips through Food Up Front.

If you choose to pick up your Food Up Front seeds at our teaching garden in Downsview Park, you'll get a tour of our urban farm, a demo on how to prep a garden bed, and an opportunity to take home a seedling or two. We'll also be at the Food Up Front seed pickup booth at EcoFair Toronto, so bring us your gardening questions!

Visit our website for our free mini gardening guides and to sign up for our newsletter, which includes monthly gardening to-do lists and growing tips: https://homesteadto.com/

The first week of April is the sweet spot for starting your tomato seedlings indoors. While it’s tempting to start earlier, waiting until now ensures that your plants don't outgrow their pots before the Toronto weather is warm enough for transplanting. What to do if you started them too early? Pot them up once they have six “true leaves”, and add diluted fertilizer to keep them healthy until they’re ready to go outside.

The moment many gardeners wait for is finally here! Late March is the ideal time to start your fastest-growing "hot crops" indoors, especially tomatoes. Starting them any earlier can lead to them outgrowing their indoor conditions before they can safely go outside. Planting the seed (literally!) for our future tomato harvest is one of the most exciting parts of the garden season! Don't forget we have a mini seed starting guide on our website: https://homesteadto.com/mini-gardening-guides/seed-starting/
