🎓🐾 Congratulations to our Puppy Primary School graduates: Butters, Shelby, and Bosco! 🐶✨ These dedicated pups have worked hard to build essential skills that will support them in becoming well-mannered and confident companions.

During class, they learned important behaviors such as polite leash walking, practicing recall (coming when called), and staying focused on their humans in distracting environments, to name a few.

We’re so proud of their progress and the dedication of their humans! 🐾

As you may know, I am a positive reinforcement trainer. This essentially means that I do not use aversive tools (prong, choke, ecollar) or aversive methods (fear/coercion) to teach any animal any behaviour. Regardless of the breed or size of the animal, positive reinforcement is my preferred route.
If you’re wondering why I choose R+ when teaching, take a gander at a few of the reasons below:
1. R+ builds trust in your relationship. As your interactions are based on positive experiences, the animal learns to trust that you are a symbol for good times! 🤩
2. R+ offers the animal choice. Instead of training with a “do what I say” attitude, you create a dialogue with said animal, further taking their needs and feelings into consideration. Remember animals are not robots but rather sentient beings who have their own thoughts and emotions. 💬
3. R+ makes the learned behaviour stronger - by definition. Making desirable behaviours rewarding to do, increases the likelihood of the animal wanting to choose those behaviours more. Gotta love science! 👩‍🔬
4. R+ is fun! It encourages the animal to want to participate in teachable moments, making you both a team working together towards one goal. Who doesn’t want an animal teammate? ⚽️
5. I just want to make my animal proud. Personally, when I first brought Zombie home, I sat on my kitchen floor with him and as he nestled in my lap, I vowed to him to keep him safe and loved until the end of time. As his guardian, all I want is to do right by him.

I’d love to know why you choose positive reinforcement when teaching others! 😊

Sweet Charlie is learning how to be pet without interacting/biting the hand that is petting him. I love working on this exercise as it not only reinforces ignoring the hand that is petting but also is the first step to cooperative care. Look at Charlie’s focus on his mum while he completely ignores her outstretched hand... great job little buddy!

Another reason virtual lessons are fun: you see your dog students from different angles and realize they have smiley faces on their butts.
That’s one happy bum. 🤡 🍑
P. S. Swipe to see Buster owning his down stay.

Another great virtual lesson today in the books! Griffin is learning how to loose leash walk.
I love starting this exercise inside the client’s home. Typically this sets each dog up for success while learning as they are in an environment that is minimally distracting.
I usually compare trying to teach a puppy something new in an outdoor environment to trying to teach a child something with the TV on.
Seems a bit tricky to learn under those conditions doesn’t it? That’s why it’s important that we are always thinking of the learner’s (your pup’s) experience and how to best set them up to succeed!
What have you noticed that your dog finds really distracting?

Teaching virtual lessons have definitely been an adjustment in my teaching/ training routine. However, there have been some major perks! For one, I’m finding that my teaching skills have improved when instructing humans/dog guardians.
Typically, in my private in-home lessons I tend to rely heavily on demonstration and getting each dog into the groove of performing a behavioural loop usually before having their human step in. This way the human can observe, ask questions and see the training loop play out.
Obviously when it comes to virtual lessons, this is impossible so I had to up my verbal instruction game and troubleshoot from the other side of the screen.
It’s been really successful so far but the best thing about it, is each dogs’ guardians are more empowered than ever before. They experience the process first hand from start to finish, which I believe creates more opportunities for “kindred moments” to form.
This week I worked with Lola and her guardians on “luring”, “sit”, “down” and “look at me”. It was a bit tricky for Lola to lure into a down as I find generally it can be for some dogs. We tried a few methods and found the one that worked for Lola.
Her human mom and brother did an incredible job and got the full payoff as they taught her how to lure into a down so smoothly by the end of the session...all on their own! 👏☺️
