When a Pet Guardian tells me they found "one little knot," I already know the rest of the story. Here is the reality of how matting actually behaves:

The Mirror Rule: Mats almost always mirror each other. If you find a tight knot behind the left ear, under the right armpit, or on the left hip, I can almost guarantee I’ll find its "twin" on the other side. Friction from movement happens symmetrically!
The Multiplication Factor: Matting is like a magnet for more hair. Once a small knot forms, it catches every loose shed hair and neighboring fiber, pulling them into the "vortex." One knot today becomes a solid pelt by next week.

The "Tip of the Iceberg" Effect: What you feel with your fingers is usually just the top layer. By the time a mat is visible to the eye, it has usually already tightened down to the skin, creating a "web" that connects multiple mats together.
The Mercy Clip: This is why we can't "just cut out that one spot." If the mats have mirrored and multiplied across the body, the only humane way to provide relief is a full reset.
