We rescued Buddy in Barbados 5 years ago. When he came into our lives, he was terrified and deeply traumatized. It took a long time, a lot of patience, and plenty of love to earn his trust.
Unfortunately, he still carries the emotional scars of what was done to him years ago. He’s still learning that not all humans are bad. He has never shown aggression, but he will cower, hide, and run away from people. It’s heartbreaking to see such a big dog be so fearful because of the cruelty he experienced.
Today, Buddy has the life every dog deserves. But the reality is that many neglected and abused dogs in Barbados never get the happy ending that Buddy did.
I love my island, and I always will. But we need to do better. Animal cruelty laws must be enforced, and those responsible must be held accountable. We can’t keep looking the other way or turning a blind eye while animals continue to suffer.
Buddy’s story had a happy ending. Too many others never get the chance. It’s time for action.
