What makes for a truly happy dog?
✨ Routine ✨
Now you may be asking yourself: Doesn't routine become predictable and boring? Au contraire! Predictability, routine, structure, rules, guidelines; these are all things that dogs thrive on.
Think about the little associations your dog makes throughout the day. Picking up the leash might have them running to the door because they’ve learned, “Leash = walk!” The sound of the treat bag might have them appearing out of nowhere because they know, “That sound = something tasty!” On the flip side, picking up the nail trimmers might cause some dogs to suddenly disappear because they’ve learned, “Those = something I don’t enjoy.” These associations are built through repetition.
Dogs are constantly learning what certain sights, sounds, places, and routines predict, and that predictability can be *incredibly* reassuring.

A dog who knows what to expect is less likely to spend their day wondering what is going to happen next, thus decreasing anxiety, as well as decreasing hyperactivity and self soothing activities (such as chewing furniture). A dog that knows it will get exercised is less likely to destroy your house than a dog that has no expectations.

The exact routine will look different for every household, but having even a loose daily schedule gives dogs a framework for understanding their world. But routine does NOT mean doing the exact same thing every day. In fact, a good routine should have room for variety. Slightly changing the time at which you do something each day builds the expectation of 'we'll get there when we get there'. Not every activity has to happen every day! Rest is just as important as activity, for mental and physical recovery.

This is also why clear rules and boundaries are so important. Contrary to the idea that rules make a dog’s life restrictive, appropriate boundaries can actually make life easier to navigate.
If your dog knows that sitting politely gets the door opened, that their bed is a safe place to relax, or that four paws on the floor gets them attention, they don't have to constantly guess which behaviours will work. And when we make those expectations consistent, they don't make assumptions or guess at what they're supposed to be doing, they have an idea of what's expected of them.

A happy dog isn't necessarily a dog who gets to do whatever they want, whenever they want.
A happy dog is a dog who has their needs met, understands their environment, has opportunities to make appropriate choices, and can predict what comes next. 🌻🐾🧡

The Hound had his annual checkup and some vaccines performed today. We love Kincardine Veterinary and their Fear Free practice, my dogs are rarely stressed at their visits, and love to see the staff.
Auggie was particularly pleased with the efficiency and speed of his appointment - thanks to numbing cream he didn’t even notice his Lepto injection! In and out in 30 minutes, and he left with a wagging tail. 🌻🐾🧡

Flashback Friday to my first ever client, Echo 🐱🧡 This video is from nearly 7 years ago; I’ve moved, and Echo has gained TWO kittie siblings, who I love to receive videos of.
Yes, I offer more than dog walks! I’m delighted to visit with any species of pet - once upon a time I had my own scorpion, tarantulas, guinea pigs, numerous reptiles, and a handful of aquariums.
Big or small, I love them all 🌻🐾🧡
