Domino Update:
So we didn't get any definitive answers but as anyone in rescue or vet med knows, that's common. But we probably got the best of the possible outcomes so we're calling this a guardedly optimistic win for Domino so far. Here it is...
Upon blood work, the second opinion of the amazing Dr Jeff at Pet Nation, and an ultrasound, it has been narrowed down to likely being one of the following causes:
It could be this little 2lb kitten could have Cerebral Hypoplasia (CH) with an underlying infection. This would mean antibiotics and this is just him.
It could be he has meningitis, which would require antibiotics and he could possibly return to normal or have only some lasting neurological effects.
It could be he has toxoplasmosis, which would require antibiotics as well and he could possibly return to normal or, again, have only some lasting neurological symptoms. Luckily, this would require the same type of antibiotic as the possible meningitis. This antibiotic should likely clear any underlying infection causing the elevation in white blood cells as well - even if its not meningitis or toxoplasmosis.
It could also be neurological Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP). This would require a specialized medication that is now readily available (unlike a couple years ago when it was only available on the "black market") through your vet clinic. If this is the case, the neurological symptoms would likely drastically improve if not disappear entirely over the 84 day treatment.
Therefore, we are immediately starting a course of antibiotics that will hit an array of infections that could be causing his white blood cells to be elevated. We are also starting a course of GS-441524, which is the approved medication for FIP. Domino will also be on a special veterinary food to help his tummy deal with all the meds.
We should see improvement in the coming days or weeks. If so, we will continue treatment. If not, we will discontinue the treatment and that will conclude it is the first possibility.
Fingers crossed for Domino as he fights whatever is going on in his little body. We will update as things progress.
