But speaking of tattoos… did you know your pet may have one of their own?

✂️ That little tattoo inside your pet’s ear has an important job!
When pets are spayed or neutered, a small tattoo is often placed in their ear to indicate that they’ve already been fixed.

🐾 Why does it matter?
🔎 It helps veterinary teams and animal shelters recognize that a pet has already been spayed or neutered.
🏥 It can prevent a pet from undergoing an unnecessary second surgery.
🏡 If your pet ever gets lost, the tattoo provides a permanent clue about their medical history and can help with identification.

Unlike a collar or tag, a tattoo won’t fall off during an unexpected adventure! 😂

🐱 “Why is my cat limping?” … and then we found THIS! 👀

This kitty came to us because of a limp, and X-rays revealed the culprit: an elbow luxation— meaning the elbow joint had become displaced from its normal position.

Dr. Jen was able to reduce the luxation, carefully getting the elbow back into its proper position. To help keep everything where it belongs while healing begins, we applied a spica bandage to provide support and stability after the reduction. 🩹🐾

The good news? This little patient is doing well and is on the road to recovery!💚

Elbow luxations can happen following trauma, falls, or other injuries, and they aren’t always obvious from the outside. If your pet suddenly develops a limp, especially after an injury, it’s worth getting them checked out.

😳 “WHAT IS THAT THING?!”

If you’ve ever found a strange lump with a tiny hole on your cat, you may have come across a botfly larva — also known as Cuterebra. 🪰

And yes… that lump can actually have a little bug living inside it. 😳

🐱 Outdoor cats are especially likely to encounter Cuterebra. The larvae can enter through natural openings or small wounds and eventually settle under the skin, where they develop into a warble — a lump with a small breathing hole.

🔎 Things you may notice:
• A new lump, often around the head or neck
• A tiny hole in the centre of the lump
• Discharge from the opening
• Your pet paying LOTS of attention to one particular area

⚠️ Important: If you find a lump with a small opening, don’t squeeze or try to remove it yourself! The larva needs to be removed carefully and intact, as rupturing it can cause significant inflammation and complications.

So if you discover a mysterious lump with a suspicious little breathing hole… don’t panic, but definitely let your veterinarian take a look. 🩺🐾

🍂 Cooler weather doesn’t mean ticks are gone!

Ticks can actually become more active again during the cooler fall months. That means it’s important to continue tick prevention even as temperatures start to drop.

🦌 Deer ticks (black-legged ticks) are especially important because they can transmit diseases such as Lyme disease and anaplasmosis.

And just look at how tiny they can be! 👀 Take a peek at the picture attached to see just how small a deer tick can be. They can be surprisingly easy to miss on your pet.

So, don’t let the cooler temperatures fool you — tick season isn’t over just yet! 🍁🐾

The days are getting shorter… but thankfully, we’re DONE changing the clocks.

Although judging by this nose, someone clearly didn’t get the memo about things getting shorter. 😂🐶

Shorter days. Longer noses. We’ll take it!

But the real question is… does your dog approve of the new “no more changing the clocks” decision? ⏰🐾

FLEA FRIDAY!

A few things you may not know about these tiny pests…

🏡Most of the flea life cycle happens OFF your pet — eggs and immature stages can be hiding in carpets, bedding, furniture, and around your home.
🐾 One flea can lay dozens of eggs a day, so an infestation can grow surprisingly quickly.
🐶🐱 Both dogs AND cats can get fleas, even indoor-only pets.
🩸 Fleas feed on blood and, in severe infestations, can even contribute to anemia, especially in young or small pets.
🪱 Fleas can also transmit tapeworms when pets swallow an infected flea while grooming.
👀 And you may never actually SEE a flea! Some pets groom them away, so itching may be your first clue.
✨ Fun fact: Many tick prevention products also protect against fleas!

Pancreatitis. Fatty liver. An esophageal tube. And a happy ending. 💚

What is hepatic lipidosis (fatty liver disease)? 🐱

Hepatic lipidosis is a serious liver condition that can develop when a cat stops eating for a period of time. When the body isn’t receiving enough nutrition, it begins breaking down fat for energy. In cats, large amounts of this fat can accumulate in the liver, interfering with its normal function.

Hepatic lipidosis is often secondary to another underlying illness that causes a cat to lose its appetite — in this case, pancreatitis.

The good news is that with prompt treatment, nutritional support, and treatment of the underlying cause, cats can make a full recovery. 💚

This is why a cat that stops eating should never be ignored. Early veterinary intervention can make a huge difference.

In the pictures you’ll see the liver values significantly elevated (ALT, ALP, GGT and total bilirubin). As we monitored them during treatment, the pancreas resolved and the liver values followed until everything went back to normal!

Also pictured is Dr Jen placing an esophageal tube for nutrition management which is part of the recovery process for this condition.
