Death by 1,000 tiny cuts.

Last week, I had a disturbing dream. I was sitting in a waiting area when a group of people gathered around me, each holding a safety pin. One by one, they started stabbing me while a woman watched from across the room.

When I woke up, the symbolism felt pretty obvious: death by 1,000 tiny cuts.

I think this represents a part of running a small business that most people do not see. Everyone sees only their one interaction with you: their one forgotten task, missed detail, mistake, delay, unanswered message, or problem that needs fixing. Because it is only one thing to them, it may not feel like a big deal.

What they do not see is that there may be 99 other people who also have "one little thing" that day.

Behind the scenes are clients, students, employees, contractors, tenants, suppliers, products, websites, booking systems, emails, social media, schedules, invoices, animals, property responsibilities, and personal life.... all needing attention at the same time.

They also do not see what it takes to correct each small mistake: the messages, screenshots, troubleshooting, explaining, following up, or stopping the work planned to fix something else.

To each person, it is one small mistake. But when you are responsible for catching, correcting, explaining, and carrying hundreds of those little things, they accumulate.

This is not about expecting perfection. People make mistakes. I make mistakes. It is about recognizing how much small business owners carry behind the scenes.

Sometimes burnout does not come from one catastrophic event. Sometimes it comes from hundreds of small demands, mistakes, interruptions, and responsibilities accumulating over time.

One safety pin may not seem capable of causing much harm. But 1,000 tiny cuts can wear a person down.

To all the small business owners carrying the weight of 100 things nobody else can see: I see you. You are probably doing far more than anyone realizes.

She’s home 😭😭 I purchased this mare 5 years ago as a project and she was just one of those ones you cannot emotionally let go of. I lost track of her and the initial owners moved to the US and burnt quite a few bridges along their travels making it hard to get any information on her whereabouts. I spent 3 months on Facebook searching for her and praying she was ok and didn’t end up dumped somewhere 💔 I just wanted to know she was okay at this point and offer a soft place to land if she needed that. Finally a comment on one post lead me to her new family in Montana and they had been loving on her for 2 years. She taught her young kids to ride and loved her to pieces but they had just out grown her. She didn’t even want to list her as she was so special to them but thankfully she didn’t have to. One of my borders was in search of their unicorn and purchased her. She’s been to Vegas, Florida, Idaho, Vancouver island & Montana but I can now promise her there will be no more travelling. She is home for life whether it’s with my border or myself she isn’t allowed to go anywhere ever again. Welcome home Kimber, now Cheerio 🤍🤍🤍 Congrats Crystal Soucey on the best purchase ever!

Amazing first event of the year in Maple Ridge for myself & Prim. Sadly forgot a jump on xc otherwise we would have finished on our dressage score of 29.4. I am still so happy with the weekend and extremely proud of how she handled her first event and second show ever! So looking forward to the next and ready for a move up.

The rest of the Copperview clan is off to Vernon riding club this weekend for their jumper show. Wishing them all the success over the weekend!!
