North West Animal Shelter We are a registered charity. Our mandate is to operate an animal shelter to serve the Bulkley Valley, to rehome abused and abandoned animals.

What do you actually do for animals? We work with the Town of Smithers to rehome impounded dogs that are not claimed. We foster and adopt rescue dogs and cats both locally and throughout BC and Alberta. We have sent dogs to new homes as far away as Philidelphia and Juno. We fund raise to make sure our programs are funded and money is available to operate the shelter. We provide outreach to the community by visiting schools and providing education about animal welfare. We offer spay and neutering assistance program to those who would otherwise not be able to afford the full cost. We have formed relationships with nine outside rescue groups who post available animals on their web sites, and/or take them into their programs, or connect us directly to adoptive families. We assist to screen potential adopters. We assist with photos, transportation to the airport and to veterinary appointments. We help to assess, exercise, train, and bathe rescued dogs.

FOR ADOPTION:

MOANA is an adorable, approximately 1-year-old female looking for a quiet and loving forever family.

This sweet girl was live-trapped alongside her babies when the abandoned home they were sheltering in was set for demolition. While it took some time for the entire family to adjust and learn to trust humans, they are all now ready to find their forever homes.

Through everything she has been through, Moana has remained remarkably gentle and sweet—even in her most terrified moments, she has never shown a hint of aggression. After a couple of months of consistent, kind handling, Moana has learned to truly enjoy human companionship. She loves being petted, especially around her face and head, and will comfortably allow herself to be held.

Because she is still learning about life indoors, new environments can feel overwhelming for her. Moana will naturally look for a cozy hidey-hole in a new space, so her future family will need to come to her for affection while she settles in. She happily accepts love from people of all ages but thrives best in a quiet home. She can easily handle visiting children or kids who prefer relaxing with a good book rather than rowdy play.

Moana has been wonderful with the other cats at the shelter; she is submissive, curious, and friendly. She would do fantastic in a home with another gentle yet confident cat to show her the ropes. She has had very limited interaction with dogs, so if she were to share a home with one, it would need to be a calm dog that is entirely uninterested in cats.

Moana is looking for an indoor-only home where she can feel safe and comfortable; if she were to get outside, she would likely run and hide out of fear.

Moana is spayed, vaccinated, and up to date on parasite control.

If you have been looking for a gentle, sweet companion, apply today at www.nwas.ca for a chance to meet MOANA!

Zorro is currently residing at Total Pet. Go say hello and get some snuggles!

FOR ADOPTION: ZORRO is a friendly and playful approximately 1.5 year old male who is looking for a fun forever family. Zorro comes to us from a bit of a cat colony situation but has had consistent, kind handling from the people in his life. He is a really engaging and fun boy that loves full body pets and getting his play on! Zorro does not understand why anyone would want to pick him up and is awkward and uncomfortable in those situations but he loves to come to you to initiate pets. If you’re not someone that wants to be carrying your cat around this could be the boy for you. Zorro has been excellent with the other cats at the shelter, most likely because he’s grown up around so many of them. He has had limited interactions with dogs so far in his life but his friendly and curious personality make him a good match for a calm and gentle dog. He’s also had limited interactions with children but seems to warm up quickly to everyone that is kind to him. If there was a respectful kid that liked to play with wand toys they could become BFFs pretty quickly. Zorro is neutered, vaccinated and up to date on parasite control. If you’ve been looking for a playful new buddy apply today at www.NWAS.ca for a chance to meet ZORRO

🐾 MEET MILLIE! 🐾

Looking for an easygoing, affectionate, and fun-loving addition to your family? Say hello to Millie! 💕

Millie is an almost 2-year-old, 53 lb mixed-breed beauty with striking brindle coloring and a heart of gold. While her exact breed is a fun guessing game, her deep chest and coat suggest she might have some Boxer in her mix! 🐶

Millie’s journey hasn't always been easy. She came to us with a face full of painful porcupine quills that had been festering for days. Yet even in immense pain among total strangers, her sweet, gentle nature shone through. Now that she’s fully healed, Millie is thriving as the ultimate love bug! ✨

Why you’ll love Millie:

💖 People-lover: Friendly and affectionate with everyone she meets, including kids!

🐕 Dog-friendly: Gentle, submissive, and happily playful with other pups.

🐱 Cat-approved: She previously lived with a mama cat and kittens and absolutely adored them!

🏡 Easygoing: Medium energy—she's up for outdoor adventures, but just as happy to snuggle on the couch.

🚗 Great Manners: Rides nicely in the car, walks well on a leash, and is quiet and non-destructive.

Millie would love a home where her people are around often, though she has no separation anxiety and does great in her kennel. Truly, she’s a gem who will fit seamlessly into almost any family dynamic!

✨ Health & Vetting: Spayed, fully vaccinated, and up to date on parasite control.

Ready to meet your new best friend? Apply today at www.nwas.ca for a chance to meet MILLIE!

Heidi is a lovely, attention loving cat but is quite shy to begin with. She is just over 2 years old, and spayed. She would love a new home that didn’t have 3 rambunctious dogs that frighten her into hiding. If you are interested in meeting Heidi, please email [email protected]

FOR ADOPTION: TUCK is a sweet and gentle 16-month-old female looking for a quiet and loving forever family.

This lovely lady was born a stray, living in the backyard of a caring family who took the time to earn her trust. Once they were able to catch Tuck, she was brought into a loving foster home where she promptly had a litter of kittens. Those babies grew up safe and warm, breaking the cycle of straydom, and the entire cat family became well-handled and sociable.

All of Tuck's babies have been weaned and adopted. Now that she has been spayed, she is so ready for her happily ever after! Tuck is a friendly, sociable, and affectionate cat who loves belly rubs and enjoys playing quietly with her toys or other cats. She has been very easy to introduce to the other resident cats and is slightly submissive with them. However, Tuck is not at all comfortable with dogs and can be reactive toward them if they get too close, so she would prefer a dog-free home.

Tuck was found to have a grade 2 heart murmur at her first vet appointment. We performed a full cardiac workup, which determined that her murmur is not clinically significant; it simply needs to be monitored at her routine vet appointments.

Tuck has been very happy staying strictly indoors while in NWAS care and has never tried to venture outside. We think she is quite content with the cushy indoor life, though she has the skills to be an indoor/outdoor cat in a safe environment once she is very settled in her new home. A catio would offer the best of both worlds, allowing her to enjoy fresh air while remaining safely contained.

Tuck is spayed, vaccinated, and up to date on parasite control. If you've been looking for a little love bug, apply today at www.nwas.ca for a chance to meet TUCK!
