As summer draws to an end, it’s time to say a big thank you to our wonderful summer student, Audrey Miller, as we send her back to school for the next chapter of chasing down that DVM dream. 🐴❤️

Audrey has been an incredible addition to our practice this summer — consistently jumping in to help with all of the hard things, while bringing her sparkle, energy, and genuine enthusiasm for all things equine veterinary medicine along with her.

We have loved having her as part of our team, and we’re going to miss her!

So it’s so long for now, but definitely not farewell. We’re wishing Audrey all the very best as she heads back to school, and we certainly hope to see her again soon.

Please join us in saying a huge thank you to Audrey for all of her hard work this summer — and wishing her the very best in everything that comes next! 🐴🩺📚

A coat that won’t shed out. A topline that’s lost its shape. Lower energy than usual, or a horse that’s more prone to picking up infections.

On their own, these can look like “just getting older.”

Together, they’re often early signs of PPID (Cushing’s Disease) a hormonal condition that’s far easier to manage the earlier it’s identified.

Air Quality Update – Caledon

We woke up to another smoky morning, and today’s air quality is even worse than yesterday. The Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) is currently 10 (High Risk), with 10+ (Very High Risk) reported in nearby areas due to wildfire smoke.

Considerations for today:
• If possible, keep horses in the environment with the best air quality, whether that is indoors or outdoors.
• Reduce unnecessary exercise and minimize heat exposure, as heat increases respiratory effort and can make smoke-related irritation more significant.
• Keep horses well hydrated to the best of your ability.
• Reduce dust by soaking or steaming hay when appropriate and avoiding dusty barn activities whenever possible.

Watch for:
• Coughing
• Nasal discharge
• Increased respiratory rate or respiratory effort
• Nostril flaring
• Increased abdominal effort during breathing
• Decreased appetite or lethargy

Horses with asthma, recent respiratory disease, or other chronic respiratory conditions may be affected sooner and more severely than healthy horses.

Remember that smoke particles are often invisible, so even if the sky appears to improve, air quality may still be poor. The AQHI is a better indicator than visibility alone.

We woke up to smoky skies from the northern wildfires this morning, and unfortunately that means air quality is something to consider for our horses today.

🐴 Healthy horses
• Turnout is generally fine if they are comfortable.
• Consider reducing or postponing strenuous exercise, especially fast work or conditioning rides.
• Monitor for coughing, increased respiratory effort, or a prolonged recovery after exercise.

🐴 Horses with asthma or other respiratory conditions
• Avoid strenuous exercise until air quality improves.
• Reduce dust exposure by soaking or steaming hay when appropriate and avoiding dusty barn chores while horses are inside.
• Watch closely for coughing, increased respiratory effort, nasal discharge, or a decreased appetite.

Even if the sky appears to clear later today, smoke particles can remain in the air. Check local air quality conditions before riding and adjust your horse’s workload accordingly.

Work hard. Play harder. Eat, sleep, and leave when you can… all pretty familiar sayings in equine practice.

This summer, we’ve been doing a little of both—but if we’re being honest, mostly the play. ☀️🐴

Jenna and Audrey have been working hard, building new skills, taking on new challenges, and making the most of every day. Between the long hours, barn laughs, road trips, and great horses, it’s been a pretty incredible summer so far.

There really is no better office than an Ontario barn in the summertime. 💚

A huge thank you to all of our wonderful clients who let us capture and share little moments from our farm calls. We truly appreciate your support and the trust you place in us every day.
