On this FERAL FRIDAY my heart is feeling a bit heavy…

After a slow start to kitten season, now it just won’t give up.

These are a few of the requests that have come in this past week. Requests we’re not able to help with because our current foster homes are full.

There is nothing that weighs heavier on my heart than knowing about these kittens and knowing they likely won’t get the help they need.

They’re of a crucial age - left much longer outdoors and they’ll be too feral to tame and then they’ll only know life on the street rather than the comfort and love of a home. Instead of bringing them into care as kittens, I’ll be called back when they’re adults to TNR. As a rescuer, that reality sucks.

I won’t lie and say fostering is always easy, but most times it is, and other times it’s a rewarding challenge. I think it’s easier than many people think. Each of these people who contacted me were told we could help if they were able to foster. None obliged. As a rescuer, that also sucks. As someone caring for multiple cats, save me the “I have two cats already, I can’t” excuse. (I get it, some people legitimately cannot foster.)

That being said, if anyone with ONLY two cats 😉 would like to help us save some lives, send us a message!

This time last year, Pom Pom was in foster care with us. Today he’s giving back by being the best foster brother to baby Rosie. He’s reassuring her that her forever family will eventually come and she’ll get her happily ever after, just like he did!

As a foster-based rescue, families willing to provide temporary loving homes to our cats in care are essential.

With requests coming in every day and for up to 30 cats/kittens a week, we’re always looking for new foster families!

It’s heart-warming when one of our previous adopters returns as a foster family. ❤️‍🔥

(Rosie and Peppermint Patty, featured last week, are both still awaiting forever homes! 😉)

It can sometimes be difficult navigating the challenges of rescue while experiencing heartbreak within your own family.

On Friday, we unexpectedly lost the matriarch of our animal family. The very first animal Matt and I owned together, Sadie was with us for 15 years.

She showed up as a spunky kitten on our porch, the morning after a storm. We were leaving within days to go to Newfoundland so Matt’s mom came and fed her outside while we were gone. Sure enough, she was there when we returned.

We still talk about the night we pulled in the lane and this little flash of white ran across the roof of the house, down the cedar tree and met us at the back door.

We soon brought her inside where she promptly locked us out of our own bathroom.

And then we brought Tuker home, and while she pooped her pants upon their first meeting, she ended up loving him as much as we did.

She saw many animals come and go through our home, never loving any feline after Little Girl and Betsy. I guess two friends was her max.

I’ll miss her chasing me around demanding multiple snacks an evening, drinking from my water glass, and helping me prepare almost every meal and crying until I would give her a plate of whatever meat I was cooking.

She lived a good life, but not long enough.

I wish I could give you one more head scritch and tell you how much I love my old girls as the three of you’d snooze on the dryer together. I’ll miss you Suadie Lady. 🩶🤍🧡

CHARLIE’S IN JAIL!! 🚓

And he’s not getting out until he posts bail.

$280.55 to be exact

What has Charlie been arrested for?

Assault with a weapon! 🦷

Charlie was being allowed more free time in the cat room lately (more on that later). But he got a little excited by his new found freedom and bit Grease Monkey on the butt. 🤦‍♀️

So, Charlie’s back in jail until he can cover the cost of his damages - Grease Monkey’s emergency vet visit today after the bite wound abscess burst.

He’s apologized but Grease Monkey isn’t havin’ it. She’s holding a strong grudge. And who can blame her! She spent the day at the vet, had to move out of the cat room, is on a couple different medications, wearing a cone of shame and crossing her little paws that surgery won’t be needed.

So, Grease Monkey’s mad. Charlie is sad he’s back in jail and lost a friend. And I’m a bit of both!

Charlie really hopes some of his supporters will help him raise what he needs for bail and promises no more shenanigans after this!

Bail can be sent to:

🐾 CATS OF THE DAY 🐾

Sisters from different misters (and misses) - Rosie and Peppermint Patty

Rosie is friendly, playful and loves to cuddle. She’s Little Miss curious. She will come running to greet anyone that walks through the door - humans, cats, small dogs, she doesn’t judge she just wants to make new friends.

She loves to play with mice, catnip knots, kicker pillows and foam balls. Rosie enjoys hanging around in the cat tree with a regular rotation of climb, play, nap, repeat. She loves playing in the kitty tents and tunnels and wrestling with the other cats and kittens.

Peppermint Patty is Little Miss Cautious but Cuddly.
She loves to be cuddled and petted while purring away. She loves to nudge her face up into your chin and neck and nibble on beard hair if you have any.
She takes time to fully trust and get into play mode but after some time adjusting her playful side comes out. She is friendly with the other cats and dogs and will wrestle and play with the other kittens/cats but usually waits for them to initiate play.

Peppermint is happy playing solo with her mice, foam balls, catnip knots and kicker pillows. She will go in the cat tunnels and tents but prefers to sit/nap inside as opposed to playing in them. She enjoys sleeping in the cat tree and napping under beds.

It’s FERAL FRIDAY again!

And it’s like the cats knew…

First thing this morning I received a message that 3 kittens had been dropped off at a local business. Employees had already trapped one but couldn’t get the others.

Off I went, armed with every type of trap I own.

After talking to more employees I found out there had been an adult around getting fed and was likely the mom, so they weren’t necessarily drop offs after all.

Long story short, mom showed up out of no where, waltzed right under the drop trap with a kitten and was quickly caught. The third kitten took a bit longer but was also caught with the drop trap. (Thanks to the supporter who bought us that!!)

Luckily I have spay/neuter appts on Monday so mom can be quickly vetted and returned to the location where employees are dedicated to feeding her.

The kittens are very scared but young enough to be socialized. They’re skin and bones so it seems mom was tapped out.

This was an unplanned addition to the crew and makes 11 intakes this week.
