We did it! With your support, we were able to order the 300 vaccines needed to embark on an epic vaccination journey + protect our rescue bunnies.

For efficient protection, we held a weekend mobile vax clinic, travelling around Langley and Richmond to administer these essential vaccinations (big thanks to Dr Veronica, Deanna & Emma for volunteering their time!).

Over two days, we vaccinated 235 rabbits. And in the weeks since our travelling clinic, Dr. Boo has graciously volunteered his time to vaccinate new intakes and babies coming of age with the remaining vials.

Thank you to everyone for their generosity in protecting our bunnies.

Our fundraising efforts aren’t done quite yet. While we reached our goal to protect these rabbits, there’s a whole new group that needs protection soon.

Please continue spreading the word about the need, and consider donating to our vaccination fund to protect future rabbits. šŸ°šŸ’‰ https://petfundr.com/RHDVaccine

Spot is OVER being a shelter bunny. If he doesn't go home soon, we don't know what lengths he'll go to (picturing a prison break with volunteer hostages).

Here's the thing. Spot is 7 years young and has been with us for a whole 6 years. He tried the colony lifestyle (Wasn't for him. He failed SEVERAL times). Has been on bountiful speed dates (a veracious humper and wouldn't you know, other bunnies don't always love that?). And had a couple of short foster stints (he faked a stasis episode, then started eating immediately after being returned to the shelter for treatment).

Truly individual, Spot knows what he wants - to be fed bountifully, admired from afar, then left to grumble in his latest hideout.

He's 2 kg of pure harlequin handsome-ness, but is consistently passed up for newer, "shinier" models. Could this be because he gives every human that passes by the stink eye? Possibly... but here's photo evidence of him giving the sweetest baby eyes in existence! The duality of bun.

We're not done looking for solutions for Spot - we know there's a better future for him than spending his final years as a shelter "lifer." He just needs the right human for the job.

Do you have what it takes to become Spot's favourite person? You'll need to be seriously cool. Rabbitats.org/adopt - Rabbitats.org/foster

The bunnies won’t stop spawning around Vancouver (they’re catching rides in car undercarriages, but it’s more exciting to think of them appearing out of thin air).

One little bunny was traipsing around 8th and Cambie for weeks while the entire block was trying to catch them. With our bellies full of Thanksgiving Tofurkey, we went out to try our hand at bringing him to safety.

He’s a clever duck, knowing when to slip onto private property or dense hydrangea bushes. But with a few x-pens and Alison creeping through the bushes, Meg was able to catch him as he made his final dash! Once in his carrier, he settled into a loaf while being transported to sanctuary.

While he now has fewer gardens to sample, he’s also away from a busy intersection and Skytrain construction. We hope it was a fair trade! Lovingly referred to as Tofurkey Cranberry until we’re able to s*x the little one.

And last night, another little bun at a dangerous spot on W10th and Oak! The team used themselves to shield the bun’s path from the busy road while Simon swooped in for a snatch-and-grab! (Note their shocked expression). No name yet for our little blondie, but they’ll be joining Tofurkey at the sanctuary soon.

Donations are super appreciated and needed to help with their care, fund blondie’s spay/neuter (one of our community members has graciously offered to pay for Tofurkey’s fix), and RHD vaccinations.

Donation button not working? Paypal Giving has low fees, paypal.com/ca/fundraiser/charity/3764772, and rabbitats.org/donate also works.

Help us track the Richmond rabbits and win some prizes! All you need is a camera... šŸ“ø 🤳

THE CONTEST

There are an estimated 2,000 feral domestic rabbits living outside in Richmond, from yards to parks to medians to hedgerows.

They don’t belong out there.

Rabbitats is holding a photo contest using our map on our abandonedrabbits.com website to encourage community members to use the tool, help us track populations, and advocate for a humane solution.

Prizes include a private Meet n’ Treat for you and 9 friends, tickets to the Cozy Carrots bunny lounge and more!

HOW TO ENTER:

1. Identify domestic abandoned or feral rabbits in public areas (parks, streets, etc). Snap a pic! - NOTE: Do not take pictures on private properties other than your own without express permission from the owners or tenants.

2. Report the sighting to our abandonedrabbits.com map with as much information as possible. - Our volunteers monitor these sightings daily, and dispatch trapping support for those who need it most when we have the resources available.

3. Mention ā€œphoto contestā€ in the notes to enter the contest. - The winner will be chosen by a committee, and receive a Meet n’ Treat party with real bunnies as their prize.

4. Get a special mention! - We’ll also recognize standout photos for the Most Rabbits in One Frame, Cutest Rabbit, and Best Comedy Shot on our social media.

* photo contest runs from October 15th-December 1st, 2026, with full rules and details at rabbitats.org/photo-contest *

We’re bad at thank you’s.

When you work in animal welfare… just trying to survive the latest catastrophe, it can be easy to put up the blinders, focus on the current crisis, and keep it chugging.

For every ā€œthanks!ā€ we manage to shout out along the way, there are a dozen animal heroes who go largely unrecognized - volunteering their time to make sure every bunny is fed, dreaming up fresh fundraising ideas, tracking vaccines and ensuring everyone is protected…

Rabbitats is made up of so many incredible advocates, all making the extra effort for the bunnies. We really need to do a better job of sharing our thanks.

Today, we’d like to recognize one of our fosters who’s doing her best to change our oldies’ lives.

Emily chose to foster because of her experience volunteering at the shelter. Going home after her shifts was hard, knowing these bunnies had nowhere else to go. So she wanted to share her home with some of them.

She felt the deepest connection with the oldies and special needs buns, and they were often the most grateful for her love, more likely to be overlooked due to age, personality, or disability.

She took home 8-year-old Aries and Gemini, a pair of sanctuary ā€œlifersā€.. and changed their lives.

Gemini has since passed, but did so in the dignity of a loving home. Aries is now joined by his new girlfriend, Hayley, and couldn’t be more different from the timid bunny he was at the shelter.

Aries is the king of the house, filled with purrs and confidence whether he’s lounging on the floor or snuggling on the bed.

Emily has also since brought home home 10-year-old Maru (a recent widower), and Raggamuffin (a blind rabbit who deserved more than our sanctuary could offer).

ā€œThere’s nothing more rewarding than being the first human to earn a bunny’s love and trust, or knowing you’re giving a bunny who’s been someone else’s faithful companion a new lease on life,ā€ Emily says. ā€œThere are so many more bunnies at Rabbitats who would flourish in a home if they were only given the chance.ā€

We’re thankful for Emily, as well as all of our fosters, supporters, volunteers, staff, and beyond - you make our little bunny world go-round šŸŒŽšŸ°šŸ’›

The rabbits don't vote and Rabbitats doesn't get political, but we want to take the pending civic and provincial elections as an opportunity to thank three politicians who have been there for us. Henry Yao is running in Richmond Centre, and for his last stint as an MLA, he was the most helpful, honest politician ever. He didn't pull any punches, he told us when we were wrong and supported us when we were right. He is a true mediator in a climate of extremes. Michael Wolfe, running again for Richmond City Council, has been our most prominent supporter and our voice on council for years. And Pete Fry, a Vancouver City Councillor, running to become next mayor, has been extremely attentive to the rabbit issues in Vancouver. Whatever the outcome, we want to thank them for their support! (This post is not meant to be a debate, just some kudos).
