A “sit” and a “wait” makes the walk start off great! I don’t allow any over-arousal, bolting out the door, whining, barking, or other such shenanigans before heading out for a walk. Not because I don’t want the outing to be fun for the dog, but because if I allow the dog to be in a hyper-arousal state of mind before even leaving the house, that sets them up for reactivity when out and about. Beginning an outing in a calm state of mind makes a huge difference! And usually the best way to do this is for the handler to be calm and quiet. Pic of this good girl who does a great sit and wait before heading out. 🐾
