Meet Cider, a handsome 5-year-old domestic short-haired cat who came to Bluewater Veterinary Emergency Clinic with significant swelling on the left side of his face.

On examination, Cider was found to have a large abscess on his left cheek.

Our team clipped, cleaned, lanced, and flushed the abscess to help relieve pressure and begin the healing process. Cider was sent home with pain medication, antibiotics, and instructions for wound care.

Over the next several days, we expect the swelling to gradually decrease while the abscess continues to drain and heal. Most abscesses heal well within 10–14 days with appropriate treatment and monitoring.

We wish Cider a smooth and speedy recovery and thank his family for trusting us with his care. ❤️🐾

⚠️ Water Emergencies in Dogs: Symptoms Can Appear Hours Later 🌊🐾

A near-drowning incident can become life-threatening for dogs, even hours after they seem okay. 🌊🐾

When water is inhaled into the lungs, it can cause severe inflammation and fluid buildup known as non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema. This makes breathing extremely difficult and also places dogs at high risk for developing secondary pneumonia.

Signs can worsen over time, so it’s important to monitor closely after any water-related accident.

⚠️ Warning signs to watch for:
• Rapid or laboured breathing
• Coughing or frothy discharge
• Blue-tinged gums or tongue
• Weakness or collapse
• Crackling sounds while breathing
• Extreme lethargy

Treatment often includes oxygen therapy, chest X-rays, IV antibiotics, and intensive monitoring to help stabilize and support the lungs while they heal.

As we spend more time around pools, lakes, and beaches this season, accidents can happen quickly. If your dog experiences a near-drowning event or begins showing any breathing concerns after being in the water, seek emergency veterinary care immediately.

Meet Marvin 🐾

Marvin, an 8-month-old domestic short-haired cat, visited us after getting a fish hook embedded in his left front paw. His owner suspects it may have happened while fishing equipment was being organized and discarded earlier in the day.

Because fish hooks contain a barb, they cannot simply be pulled back out safely. Marvin was sedated so the hook could be carefully advanced through the skin and removed with minimal pain and stress. After removal, his paw was thoroughly cleaned and flushed, and he received a long-acting injectable antibiotic to help prevent infection.

Thankfully, Marvin recovered very well from sedation.A full body check also confirmed there were no additional hooks or injuries.

🎣 With fishing season here, fish hooks can pose a serious risk to both cats and dogs — whether on hiking trails, docks, shorelines, or even at home while gear is being handled. Always keep fishing equipment securely stored and disposed of properly to help keep curious pets safe.
