🌊 Water Safety Tips for Pets This Summer! 🐾

Nothing says summer like a day on the water, but keeping your pet safe should always come first.

💦 Not all dogs are natural swimmers. Introduce them to water gradually and always supervise them, even if they're experienced swimmers.

🦺 A properly fitted life jacket is recommended for boating and for pets that are inexperienced or less confident in the water.

🏊 Around pools, teach your pet where the steps or ramp are, provide fresh drinking water, and rinse them off after swimming to remove chlorine.

🌿 At lakes and beaches, watch for strong currents, blue-green algae, wildlife, and prevent your pet from drinking stagnant water.

🚤 If you're out on a boat, provide shade, fresh water, and keep pets away from fishing gear and other hazards.

👀 After swimming, rinse and dry your pet thoroughly, check their ears, and monitor for coughing, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, or difficulty breathing.

With a little preparation, you and your pet can safely enjoy all your summer adventures. If your pet experiences any signs of distress after a day on the water, seek veterinary care promptly.

🐾 Meet Bandit! 🐾

Bandit, a 2-year-old Golden Retriever, came to Bluewater Veterinary Emergency Clinic after his family noticed him chewing at his tail. The sore rapidly became larger, red, painful, and started producing discharge.

On examination, Bandit was diagnosed with acute moist dermatitis, more commonly known as a hot spot. Hot spots are painful bacterial skin infections that can develop surprisingly quickly when dogs lick or chew at an itchy area. Bandit's history of recurring skin and ear issues suggests that underlying allergies were likely the cause of his itchiness.

Bandit was treated with antibiotics to address the infection, anti-itch medication to stop the cycle of licking and scratching, and a topical medication to help the skin heal. His family was also advised to keep his e-collar on to prevent further irritation while he recovers.

Hot spots often develop secondary to underlying allergies, so follow-up with your family veterinarian is important to discuss long-term allergy management and help prevent future flare-ups.

🐾 Meet Lady! 🐾

Lady, a 4.5-month-old Golden Retriever puppy, came to see us after experiencing several days of diarrhea and a single episode of vomiting. Despite her tummy troubles, she remained bright, happy, hydrated, and eager to eat — all great signs for a growing puppy!

After a thorough examination, Lady received a deworming treatment, supportive digestive care, and some special gastrointestinal puppy food to help settle her stomach and get her feeling her best again.

Puppies are naturally curious and love to explore the world with their noses (and mouths!), which can sometimes expose them to intestinal parasites or dietary upsets. Monitoring changes in appetite, energy levels, vomiting, or diarrhea is important, especially in young pets.

We're happy to report that Lady went home with a treatment plan and plenty of tail wags. 💛

Wishing this sweet girl a speedy recovery and many healthy adventures ahead!
