Does your dog tremble at thunderstorms or pace before vet?

Chamomile and lemon balm are a gentle duo that can take the edge off anxious moments — calming the nervous system without sedating your pup. You can brew a mild chamomile tea, cool it completely, and offer a small amount before stressful events. Think of it as a warm cup of calm, just for them. ☕🐶

The Dog Natural Health Series is officially complete — and Article 3 is live! 🎉🐶

This final article is the most hands-on of the three. It’s all about what you can actually do, day to day, to support your dog’s health in a natural, sustainable way.

Here’s what’s inside:

🌿 5 natural remedies worth knowing about — including coconut oil, probiotics, fish oil, and apple cider vinegar — with exactly how to use each one safely

🪷 A grooming routine that’s really a mini health check in disguise (this one surprised a lot of people!)

🏃 A breakdown of how much exercise different breeds actually need — including why "sniff walks" might be more valuable than you think

🧠 Why your dog’s mental and emotional wellbeing is a genuine health variable — not just a nice-to-have

⚠️ A clear, honest section on when natural just isn’t enough and your vet needs to be involved

📅 And a free 7-day starter checklist — one simple action per day to help you build a natural health routine from scratch

If this series has been helpful, the best thing you can do is share it with another dog owner who’d love it. More informed owners = happier, healthier dogs. 💚

Here is a great tip I'm sharing from . Knowing what your dog’s normal is, will help you identify problems early.

Do you know your dogs vital signs? Not what is normal, but what your dogs normal is...

When was the last time that you took your dogs vital signs? Taking them a few times a year can help you catch issues with your dogs health before visible signs are present. It will also improve your confidence in taking them & your dogs comfort with you taking them.

Training your dog to accept treatment can go a long way in an emergency when stress levels are already high!

📋 Here's exactly what you'll learn at my Canine CPR & Emergency First Aid course on June 20th!

I get it — before signing up for something, you want to know what you're actually walking into. So here's a full look at what we cover in this hands-on, full-day course:

🫀 CPR techniques
😮‍💨 Choking & airway obstruction
🩹 Bleeding & wound care
⚡ Shock recognition & response
🦴 Fractures & injuries
☠️ Poisoning & toxin response
🌡️ Heat stroke & hypothermia

This isn't a sit-and-listen lecture — it's a full day of hands-on practice so that when an emergency happens, your hands already know what to do. No experience necessary. Beginners are absolutely welcome.

Think about how many of those situations above could happen to your dog on any given walk, hike, swim, or backyard afternoon. Now imagine knowing exactly how to respond to every single one of them. That's what you'll leave with.

Eggs might just be the most underrated ingredient in a home-cooked dog meal 🥚

A whole egg — yolk and all — offers incredible bioavailable protein, healthy fats, vitamin D, B12, selenium, and choline (so important for brain health!).

I soft-poach mine, no seasoning, no oil. One egg for medium to large dogs a few times a week is a beautiful boost. Simple. Affordable. Nourishing. Just the way we like it. 🤍

Great news for animal lovers! 🐾

Ontario is taking a major step forward for animal welfare. Starting January 1, 2027, new regulations under the Provincial Animal Welfare Services (PAWS) Act will ban three cosmetic procedures on pets:

🐱 Declawing in cats
🐶 Devocalization (“debarking”) in dogs
🐶 Ear cropping in dogs

This is a meaningful win for pets across the province, protecting them from painful, unnecessary surgeries that have no benefit to their wellbeing. While there’s still more work to be done, this regulation signals a growing commitment to treating animals with the respect, dignity, and compassion they deserve.

Pawsitive news for animals in Ontario!

New regulations under the Provincial Animal Welfare Services (PAWS) Act will prohibit certain cosmetic procedures on cats and dogs, effective January 1, 2027.

The regulation prohibits:
- Declawing in cats
- Devocalization (“debarking”) in dogs
- Ear cropping in dogs

These procedures will only be permitted when a veterinarian determines they are medically necessary for the health of the animal. This marks a meaningful step forward in strengthening protections for animals across the province and reducing unnecessary procedures that impact their wellbeing.

There is still lots more to do but today we will celebrate this win for the animals. We look forward to continued efforts to expand protections and ensure all animals are treated with the respect, dignity, and compassion they deserve.

Together, we can continue building a brighter future for animals in Ontario. Be a voice for animals and help us continue advocating for them to be treated with respect and kindness. Visit changeforanimals.ca

Heat stroke in dogs can be life-threatening, rapidly causing organ failure and death if not treated immediately. Recognizing the early warning signs such as excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, and disorientation, can mean the difference between life and death for your pet.

As we move into the warmer temperatures, remember to always provide fresh water and shade for your dog, exercise them in the morning and/or evening when it’s cooler out, and keep watch for signs of heatstroke. NEVER leave your dog in a vehicle.

🐾 June is National Pet Preparedness Month and here at Sage & Hound Wellness, it's one of our favourite reminders that caring for our pets means planning ahead, too.

As a community, we're so good at looking out for each other — and that includes our four-legged family members. Whether it's a sudden storm, a power outage, or an unexpected evacuation, having a simple plan in place can make all the difference.

Here are a few things we recommend keeping ready for your pet:
✅ 3–5 days of food and fresh water
✅ Copies of vaccination records and any medications
✅ A sturdy carrier or leash easily accessible
✅ A familiar toy or blanket to help reduce stress
✅ Your vet's contact info — and a backup emergency vet nearby

Not sure where to start? We're always happy to chat if you want to connect.

Your pets trust you completely — a little prep goes a long way. 🐶🐱

Article 2 of the Dog Natural Health Series is live — and this one might be the most useful thing you read all week if you have a dog. 🐶

It's all about nutrition: the foundation of everything when it comes to your dog's long-term health.

Here's something most people don't realize: a lot of the common health issues dogs deal with — dull coats, itchy skin, low energy, recurring digestive problems — are directly connected to what's in their bowl every day. Not just genetics. Not just bad luck.

In this article, I break down:

✅ How to read a dog food label and actually understand what you're looking at
✅ The ingredients to look for — and the ones to avoid
✅ 7 whole foods that are safe AND nourishing to add to your dog's meals
✅ The foods that are dangerous (some of these still surprise people!)
✅ A simple 10-day method for transitioning their diet without upsetting their stomach

I also included two easy-to-reference tables you can save and come back to — one for safe foods, one for foods to always avoid.

This isn’t about overhauling everything overnight. It’s about making one more informed choice than you made yesterday.
