🐾 BLOAT IN DOGS: WHAT EVERY DOG OWNER SHOULD KNOW 🐾

Today we performed surgery on this sweet patient for a preventative gastropexy, and we wanted to take a moment to talk about bloat — a life-threatening condition that all dog owners should be aware of.

What is bloat (GDV)?
Bloat, or Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus (GDV), occurs when a dog’s stomach fills with gas and then twists on itself. When this happens, blood flow is cut off, toxins build up rapidly, and the condition can become fatal within hours if not treated immediately.

Signs of bloat include:
⚠️ Distended or hard abdomen
⚠️ Unproductive retching or gagging
⚠️ Restlessness, pacing, or signs of pain
⚠️ Excessive drooling
⚠️ Rapid breathing or collapse

This is a true emergency — if you ever suspect bloat, seek veterinary care right away.

What is a gastropexy?
A gastropexy is a surgical procedure that tacks the stomach to the body wall to prevent it from twisting. While it does not stop gas buildup, it dramatically reduces the risk of the deadly twist that makes GDV so dangerous.

Preventative gastropexy is commonly recommended for large and deep-chested breeds such as Great Danes, German Shepherds, Standard Poodles, Weimaraners, Dobermans, and others. It can often be done at the time of a spay or neuter.

If you have a large-breed dog or want to learn whether your pet may benefit from a gastropexy, feel free to talk with our team — we’re always happy to answer questions.

🐶 Prevention can save lives.

🎄 Holiday Safety Reminder for Pet Parents! 🐾
A real case from yesterday: Ollie’s emergency surgery

As beautiful as our Christmas decorations are, they can pose serious risks to our pets — and we saw a perfect example of this just yesterday.

💔 Meet Ollie.
Ollie is a sweet cat who came to us after suddenly becoming very sick. X-rays revealed that he had swallowed multiple pieces of a fake Christmas tree branch. These sharp plastic needles caused a dangerous obstruction, and Ollie needed emergency foreign body surgery to remove them.
We’re happy to share that Ollie is recovering well — but his story is an important reminder for all pet families this season.

Here are a few holiday hazards to keep in mind:

✨ Artificial Tree Branches & Decorations:
Plastic needles, flocking, tinsel, and ribbon can be tempting to chew — especially for curious cats. If swallowed, they can cause life-threatening blockages just like Ollie’s.

💡 Lights & Electrical Cords:
Pets may chew cords, risking electrical shock. Use cord covers and unplug lights when you’re not home.

🌺 Toxic Plants:
Poinsettias, lilies, holly, and mistletoe can cause stomach upset or worse. Keep them out of reach or choose pet-safe alternatives.

🎁 Fragile Ornaments:
Glass ornaments can break and cause cuts, while smaller decorations can be choking hazards.

🍫 Holiday Treats:
Chocolate, raisins, certain nuts, and xylitol-sweetened goodies should stay far away from pets.

🎅 Let’s keep the holidays joyful — not stressful.
Taking a few precautions can prevent emergencies and keep your furry friends safe. Give your décor a pet-proof check, and if you notice vomiting, lethargy, or unusual behavior, contact your vet right away.

Sending Ollie lots of healing vibes — and wishing everyone a safe, cozy holiday season. ❤️🐾

🐾✨ Celebrity Sighting at the Clinic! ✨🐾

Today we had a very special guest walk the red carpet (aka our lobby floor)… none other than Phyllis the French Bulldog puppy! 🎬💼

Named after Phyllis from The Office, she brought her signature sass, sweater style, and side-eye game to her appointment. 💅🐶

She demanded belly rubs, snubbed the scale (same, girl), and gave us her best “I’d rather be at a paper company” look the whole time. 🗂️

📸 Catch her in our next newsletter under “Pup Stars of the Week.”
