The Circle Holds
Stand in the center and turn slowly.
Everything you are
is somewhere on this wheel.
East, where the light is born
the eagle climbs the yellow morning,
and this is your beginning,
the part of you still rising,
still young enough to believe
the whole sky is a thing you can reach.
Spring. Breath. The first yes.
Turn.
South, the red and ripening
the buffalo stands in the tall summer,
and this is your fullness,
the season of giving and being given,
of bodies strong and herds unbroken,
of more than enough.
Noon. Fire. The long warm work of living.
Turn.
West, where the leaves let go
the bear walks into the blue autumn,
and this is your turning inward,
the time to gather what you've learned
and carry it down into the dark,
unafraid,
because you have done this before.
Dusk. Falling gold. The wisdom of release.
Turn.
North, the white and waiting
the wolf moves through the snow
on legs that do not tire,
and this is your endurance,
your elder cold,
the part of you that has survived
and kept the others warm.
Midnight. Snow. The patience that becomes the ancestors.
And now
stop turning.
Look at the middle of it all.
The tree.
Roots in the dark earth,
crown in the burning sun,
holding all four seasons at once
the way only the center can.
This is the thing that does not move
while everything else turns
the still green truth
that the eagle and the buffalo,
the bear and the wolf,
the spring and the snow,
the child you were and the elder you'll become
are not four different stories.
They are one circle.
They were always one circle.
And you have been walking it
your whole life,
season into season,
loss into return,
each ending feeding the next beginning
the way the falling leaf
feeds the root
that lifts the leaf again.
The circle holds.
It has always held.
Step to the center,
put your hand on the tree,
and feel how nothing
nothing
is ever truly lost.
It is only somewhere else
on the wheel,
coming back around
to you.
