What a find! This potato was too odd not to share.

It's October and I'm still in the garden. My energy is focused on harvesting- first everything that can get touched by frost. Now everything that needs to be dug before the voles eat their fill.

Nothing goes to waste if I can manage. Any potatoes that have been sampled are used immediately for our meals. These German Butterball potatoes are too good to waste. Slightly yellow flesh, with a butter taste. They taste great every way you cook them- roasted, mashed, fried.

Still to harvest: Chiefton potatoes (red skin), carrots, leeks, squash and Brussel sprouts.

I feel so honored to find a Monarch chrysalis while picking raspberries today. Based on its see through appearance, the butterfly will emerg within the day or so. I'm thankful we were able to provide a safe spot for this to happen. 🦋

I never like seeing food go to waste. As tomato season is coming to an end, I was motivated to find another use for them beyond salsa, sauce and canned tomatoes.

I'm a soup eater and having an easy meal for work seemed like a no brainer; especially when I make bone broth on the regular.

I've canned fresh tomato 🍅 soup made with bone broth, San Marzano and heritage variety tomatoes, onion, garlic, herbs and spices. Next to come, carrot 🥕 soup and Butternut squash soup.

Wanda did a great job bringing nine piglets into a dark, star filled night. Her pregnancy was a delightful surprise as she had been living with W***y, our pure bred Large Black boar, who had been suffering with lameness earlier this year. We were unsure if he could perform his job, apparently he still has some vigor left.

Wanda delivered 10 piglets, the last being stillborn. We camped out with Wanda during her labour and ensured the new arrivals were breathing, dry, on their feet, and nursing before heading to bed. Nine little butts were cuddled beside her this morning. 💕

The end of the garden season is coming and that means tomatoes, onions, peppers and garlic are in full force in the kitchen.

My all purpose tomato sauce includes: san marzano tomatoes, garlic, peppers, a couple Jalapeños (but its not spicy), Spanish onions, carrots, spinach and basil, all grown on the farm. I use it for pasta and pizza sauce.

A favourite roasted black bean and corn salsa is fresh and includes: San Marzano tomatoes, spanish onions, jalapeno, corn, garlic, peppers (all from the farm), as well as, apple c***r vinegar, lime juice, salt, pepper, black beans and cilantro.

My cellar is almost full, so Im taking orders for yours.

We were on the edge of the worst of the storm that hit Southern Ontario on Wednesday. It was a crazy 10 minutes where you couldnt see out of the the windows and you feared the worst for your livestock. We managed to get by with relatively no damage and no loss of turkeys or chickens.

All of the corn fields around us are flattened. Cars with trailers were flipped in the ditch. Barn roofs and shed were blown away. So many large trees were down on power lines. We were without power for 24 hours and our neighbours are still waiting for theirs to be restored. We were amazed how quickly everyone responded to clean up the damage and thankful for great friends and family who offered to help.

It's canning season. Humidity or not, the garden produce needs to be preserved.

Being able to watch something natural happen with no intervention is a beautiful thing. We found this broody hen sitting on 14 eggs outside and decided to let her be. If you move a hen who wants to sit on eggs, she will likely just find a new spot to lay a clutch of eggs and give it a go. We watched her over a few weeks and had a surprise this Saturday morning to find 11 fluffy chicks under her! We moved her and her children to a safe space, away from the other chickens so she can have her time to raise these new babies. We get little sneak peaks from time to time.
