Labour Day weekend: foods that can hurt your pet.

Safe for you. Not for them.

Long weekend cooking is great. Some of it is not for dogs and cats.

Keep these off the floor:
• Cooked bones and corn cobs
• Grapes and raisins
• Xylitol (some gum, mints, peanut butter)
• Onions, garlic, and chives
• Chocolate, alcohol, fatty trimmings

Just a quick reminder that the clinic will be closed on Monday due to Labour Day.

Still on summer snacks?

August runs out today. Summer is long on snacks and short on routine.

A simple reset for fall:
• Put the extra treats back on the shelf
• Keep meal times steady
• Get the walk back on the clock

Pets feel it when September starts. A predictable day is a kind one.

14 ticks. One tiny 5-week-old kitten. 🐱

A little kitten was found outside and brought in for care. During the examination, our team removed 14 ticks from its tiny body.

An important reminder that ticks aren’t just a concern for dogs outdoor cats can pick them up too.

Check your pet regularly, especially around the ears, head, neck, legs, and between the toes. And never use a tick product intended for dogs on a cat some can be dangerous for them.

The next photos show the ticks we removed, shared for educational purposes. ➡️

Pet Myths: Let’s Separate Fact from Fiction!

We hear a lot of “common knowledge” about our pets but not everything we’ve been told is actually true.

- A wagging tail doesn’t always mean a happy dog.
- Cats don’t always land safely on their feet.
- Eating grass doesn’t automatically mean a dog is sick.
- Indoor cats still benefit from regular veterinary checkups.
- And a cold, wet nose? It’s not a reliable way to tell if your dog is healthy.

Knowing what’s normal and what isn’t can help us better understand and care for our pets. ❤️

Not sure about something your pet is doing? Your veterinary team is always a better source than a pet myth. 🐶🐱

Check the chip 🐾

Even indoor pets can get lost. A door left open, a move, a stressful noise, or one unexpected escape can be enough.

A microchip gives your pet a permanent form of identification that can help reunite you if they’re ever found away from home.

But there’s one important catch: the chip only works if your contact information is up to date.

Take a minute today to:
• Confirm your pet’s microchip is registered
• Check that your phone number and address are current
• Ask your veterinary clinic to scan the chip if you’re unsure it’s working properly

A tiny chip can make a very big difference. ❤️

When was the last time you checked your pet’s nails?

Overgrown nails aren’t just a cosmetic issue. They can make walking uncomfortable, change the way your pet places their paws, and sometimes even curl into the paw pad.

Take a quick look at your pet’s nails from time to time — especially the dewclaws, which don’t always wear down naturally.

Not sure if your pet’s nails look normal? Feel free to ask us at your next visit. 😊

Our pets can’t tell us when something hurts - but they often show us in subtle ways.

In this carousel, we’ll cover five common signs that may indicate your dog or cat is experiencing pain:
• Less activity than usual
• Changes in appetite
• Changes in behavior
• Difficulty moving
• Sensitivity to touch

These signs don’t always mean there’s a serious problem, but they shouldn’t be ignored. Early evaluation can help identify the cause and keep your pet comfortable.

If you’ve noticed any of these changes, we’re here to help.

Contact Horsman Road Animal Hospital to schedule an examination.
