Eyelid agenesis is a congenital condition in cats characterized by missing upper eyelids along with other ocular abnormalities. The lack of eyelids results in fur rubbing against the cornea leading to irritation, discharge, and potential ulceration. While severe cases require reconstructive surgery, early intervention—including medical management or surgical procedures—results in an excellent prognosis for a normal life. Would you know how to spot a "silent" eye emergency in your horse?

Horses are experts at hiding pain, but their eyes tell the real story. One of our favorite subtle tricks is the "Eyelash Test"—if your horse’s lashes are pointing toward the ground instead of straight out, they are likely squinting from discomfort.

What to do while you wait for the vet:
✅ DO: Move them to a stall to keep them calm and quiet.
✅ DO: Put on a clean fly mask or cross tie them to stop them from rubbing.
❌ DON'T: Apply old ointments. Using a steroid on an undiagnosed ulcer can lead to a ruptured eye.
