Labor Day cookouts are the best. Good food, people you love, a dog working the crowd for dropped scraps.

A few of those cookout foods aren't safe for dogs, so it's worth knowing the list before the grill fires up. Keep these away from your dog:

Onions. Corn cobs, which can lodge in the gut. Grapes and raisins. Cooked bones, which splinter. Xylitol, the sweetener in a lot of sugar-free foods. Marinades. Fatty trimmings. And chocolate desserts.

None of this means your dog can't be part of the day. A little plain grilled meat with no seasoning, a few dog-safe veggies, their own chew to work on. That's plenty.

Save this one for the weekend, and tag a friend who's hosting.

Look at your dog's bowl for a second. If it's all kibble, it's probably hitting the minimums on a label.

A synthetic premix is built to check boxes. The required vitamins and minerals, in the required amounts. Fine as far as it goes. Whole plants carry so much more, though, the fiber, the carotenoids, the polyphenols, the antioxidants. Things that never make it onto a "required nutrients" list, and matter anyway.

And they don't work alone. In the body, all of it works together, supporting the gut, the body's natural repair, its normal detox pathways, and healthy aging. Meeting a minimum is one thing. Helping a dog truly thrive is another.

That's the thinking behind our Dog Greens. Whole-food nutrition from real, certified organic plants, made to sit alongside good food and support your dog's everyday wellness.

Fresh whole foods are the foundation. That's where I always start.

When the family heads back to school, the house empties out fast. All summer your dog had company all day. Then, in one week, they're on their own for six or eight hours. That sudden change is one of the most common triggers of separation anxiety in dogs.

Watch for these signs: barking, whining, or howling; chewing or digging at doors; pacing, panting, drooling; and accidents from a dog who's normally house-trained.

The good news is you can get ahead of it. Start now, before day one. Shift walks, meals, and alone time closer to the school schedule. Practice short, low-key departures, a few minutes at first, then longer. Exercise your dog before you leave, since a tired dog settles more easily. And leave a puzzle toy they only get when you walk out the door, so leaving turns into a good thing.

When everyone's home in the evening, reconnect. A walk, some play, time together.

Save this one for September, and share it with a family heading back to school. 🐾

Meet Candy, a 6-year-old Shih Tzu from Billerica, Massachusetts, with a family who takes her wellness to heart.

Candy's daily routine includes our Blood Cleansing Formula, Dog Greens, Rena-Cleanse, and Hepara-Cleanse, as part of her everyday wellness. That's the kind of steady, proactive care I love to see. Small things, done every day.

Thank you, Terry, for trusting us to be part of Candy's routine.

Dogs meet a lot in a day. New places, other animals, shifts in the weather and the seasons. A healthy immune system is what helps them take it all in stride.

Immuno-Aid is our gentle liquid formula, made to support a healthy immune system and a healthy response to everyday environmental stressors. It's built around organic Echinacea, one of the old, trusted herbs for broad-spectrum support.

The liquid goes down easy and absorbs well, so it's simple to add to your dog's routine. I always tell people that steady daily support beats scrambling when the season turns.

If dog immune system support is on your mind, this is an easy one to start with.

Most people know chamomile as a bedtime herb. It does far more than help a dog wind down for sleep.

It's one of the old ones, with more than 3,500 years of use behind it. What I reach for it for is the gut. Chamomile has a compound called apigenin that helps relax the smooth muscle of the gut wall, so it supports a settled, comfortable belly. That's a nice thing to have on hand after a stressful day or a rich meal.

It's gentle on the skin too, and soothing to the tissues of the gums, mouth, and gut lining.

A few honest cautions. Chamomile sits in AHPA Class 1, the safest group, but it isn't right for every dog. Skip it for cats, pregnant dogs, and dogs on blood thinners. If your dog reacts to the daisy family, patch-test first. And always loop in your vet.

I've spent more than twenty years around dogs, and they still teach me things all the time. Patience. Paying attention. Showing up the same way, every single day.

So today is a good day to slow down and appreciate the one at your feet. Take the long way on the walk. Let them sniff as long as they want.

Happy National Dog Day from all of us at Five Leaf Pet Botanicals.

Show us who you're celebrating. Drop a photo of your dog in the comments. 🐾

You smell dinner but your dog smells everything in it. 🐶

When a beef stew is on the stove, you get one big smell: stew. A dog's nose works differently. Their olfactory system pulls it apart: the beef, the carrots, the potatoes, each spice, all at once as separate scents.

They can do this because a dog's nose has millions of scent receptors, far more than we have. Most people don't realize how much a dog takes in with a single sniff. They live a lot closer to nature than we do.

Next time your dog stands frozen with their nose in the air, give them a second. They're sorting through every smell in the room.

What's the one smell that brings your dog running every time?

The liver is one of the hardest-working organs your dog has. It breaks down food, filters what comes through, keeps things in balance every single day.

Most people don't think about it until a blood test makes them. You can support it long before that.

I always tell people the same thing. Fresh water, good whole food in the bowl, not processed kibble. A few antioxidant-rich foods to help with the everyday wear on the body. And a walk each day, even a short sniff around the block. Silybin, has been studied in dogs and sat easy on their systems.

This is everyday support for a normal, healthy liver.

Say hello to Bella, a 9.5-year-old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel from Lake Stevens, Washington. Her family did what so many devoted dog parents do. They spent hours researching, reading, and comparing, all because they wanted the very best for her.

Bella's daily routine now includes Taurine, L-Carnitine, Dog Greens, Hawthorne, and our Canine Heart Formula, chosen to support normal, healthy heart function as part of her everyday wellness. That's the kind of proactive care I love to see, families showing up for their dogs day after day.

Thank you, Michaela, for trusting us to be part of Bella's routine.
