The sky over Blackfalds was putting on a show for tonight’s Pack Walk, & honestly, we couldn’t have asked for much better weather for nearing the end of October.

Winter is coming Alberta. We’ll take every last bit of this while we can 🤩

🥚🐾 WAIT! Before you toss those eggshells in the garbage…your dog's nutrition might benefit from them!

Something as simple as an eggshell has some interesting nutritional benefits worth knowing about!

🦴 Calcium: Eggshells are made primarily of calcium carbonate, making them a concentrated source of calcium to help support healthy bones, teeth, muscle function & nerve signalling. When finely ground, they can be used to provide calcium in carefully formulated homemade dog diets.

💪 But don't overlook the membrane! That thin layer lining the inside of the shell contains collagen, elastin, hyaluronic acid, glucosamine & chondroitin. These compounds play important roles in connective tissue & cartilage health, making eggshell membrane an interesting area of research for supporting joint health & mobility. Research on eggshell membrane supplements is promising, although more studies are needed to understand their benefits fully.

🐶 What I'm doing here: Blending the shells into a fine powder so they can be incorporated into my dogs' food.

⚠️ A little nutritional reminder: Eggshell powder provides calcium, not complete nutrition. Dogs eating a complete & balanced diet generally don't need extra calcium, & too much can cause imbalances. For homemade diets, calcium supplementation should be calculated as part of a properly balanced recipe.

Sometimes, the things we throw away deserve a second look! 🥚💖🐾

♡ Are You Micromanaging Your Dog? ♡

In the world of dog training, structure & guidance are essential. But there’s a fine line between leading & micromanaging.

Micromanaging looks like:

•Constantly correcting or talking to your dog, even when they’re calm

•Overusing commands like "sit", "leave it," "no," or their name

•Not allowing your dog space to make decisions or settle naturally

•Always stepping in before your dog can think or problem solve

•Feeling like if you stop controlling, your dog will fall apart

While it often comes from a good place, micromanaging can actually undermine confidence & prevent dogs from learning how to regulate themselves.

♡ Mistakes Are Part of the Process ♡

Dogs need the chance to make mistakes. That’s how they learn to adjust their behavior, develop coping skills, & build resilience. If we jump in too quickly, we rob them of valuable learning opportunities.

Instead, try this:

•Give your dog time to make choices (& sometimes mistakes!)

•Use calm body language over constant verbal cues.

•Guide, then pause, let them process.

•Reward moments of calm & independence.

Your dog needs leadership, but they also need room to grow. Confidence comes from learning, not from being told what to do every second.

Let’s shift from control to communication. Trust your training, trust your dog, & watch them thrive 🖤
