Stella Makes a New Friend… Sort Of
At 16½ years old, you’d think Stella might be slowing down or becoming a little more selective about who she chooses to meet.
Not a chance.
Stella has spent her entire life believing that everyone is just a friend she hasn’t met yet. People, dogs, strangers, delivery drivers—it doesn’t matter. If it has a heartbeat, Stella assumes it would be delighted to become her newest best friend.
This morning, during our usual trip out into the yard, she spotted what she was certain was an adorable new acquaintance.
A baby skunk.
Within seconds, Stella discovered that skunks have a rather unique way of saying, “I’d prefer some personal space.”
The next few minutes were… eventful.
Picture me scooping up a very surprised, very smelly 16½-year-old Löwchen, sprinting for the house like we were competing in an Olympic relay, tossing her straight into the shower, and spending the next hour carefully washing her face, cleaning her up, and making sure she was none the worse for wear.
Thankfully, she came through the ordeal just fine.
Breakfast? Devoured.
Tail? Wagging.
Spirit? Completely unbroken
So Lowchen!
In fact, she’s already bopping around the house as though nothing unusual happened, clearly wondering why everyone made such a fuss over her attempt at expanding her social circle.
Knowing Stella, the next time she heads out into the yard, she’ll march right back to the very same corner, fully expecting that perhaps this time her little black-and-white friend will be in a more sociable mood.
Some lessons are simply too trivial to get in the way of making a new friend.
