WHY SHOULD WE USE FLEA/TICK MEDS ON OUR DOGS?

They’re used to protect your animal’s health, prevent disease, and reduce risk to humans. But they’re not always “one-size-fits-all,” and overuse isn’t ideal either.

Why parasite meds matter
1. Internal parasites (worms) Medications (often called dewormers) help control parasites like roundworms, hookworms, and tapeworms.
These can:
Cause weight loss, diarrhea, poor coat condition
Lead to serious illness in young or weak animals
Sometimes spread to humans (zoonotic risk)
2. External parasites (ticks, fleas) Ticks and fleas aren’t just annoying—they can carry diseases:
Ticks can transmit illnesses like Lyme disease
Fleas can cause allergic reactions and spread tapeworms
Heavy infestations can lead to anemia, especially in small animals
Benefits of using these meds
Keeps your pet comfortable (no itching, biting, irritation)
Prevents serious infections before they start
Reduces risk of parasites spreading in your home or yard
Often cheaper and easier than treating a full-blown illness later
But here’s the important nuance
Using these meds blindly or too often isn’t ideal. Good care means:
Using the right product for your animal and region
Following proper dosing (overuse can cause side effects or resistance)
Talking to a vet about whether year-round vs seasonal treatment makes sense where you live (e.g., ticks are more active in warmer months in places like British Columbia)
Bottom line
Parasite medications aren’t just “extra”—they’re preventative healthcare. The goal isn’t to medicate unnecessarily, but to strike a balance between protection and responsible use.
