Pawz Furst Dog Grooming

Pawz Furst Dog Grooming From basic baths, bath and tidy’s, full grooms, canine dental cleanings and everything in between 🐾 My name is Samantha Allison, I was raised in Greenwood BC.

I absolutely loved growing up in my small community. I have two fur babies of my own. Bindi is a 4-year-old energetic Red Merle Australian Shepherd. Then there is Kona. My beautiful 9-year-old, Havanese crossed Pug (a Hava-pug) who is food obsessed. Growing up, I was always surrounded by animals. While most teenagers were taking babysitting jobs, I was taking dog sitting jobs. In my late teenage y

ears I started farm-sitting, this is where I had the chance to work with dogs working on the farms and so my love for dogs continued to grow. In my 20's I spent time bouncing between Merritt and Greenwood, the two places I loved the most. In 2019 I started working at Pet Valu in Merritt BC. Through them I received my Pet Expert Certificate, specializing in dogs. I also personally worked with dogs that were difficult with nail trimming and started realized how important this was, the need for helping these dogs was in very high demand. I also worked with a lot with dogs with allergies, weight problems, dietary issues. I took additional training on different foods, and products whenever the chance arose, building my knowledge base. I am well educated in most brands of foods including the raw food diet. With my experience working there I began to see another need; groomers were in high demand. This would begin the next chapter in learning about dogs and continue with my love for them. I was accepted into Western Dog Grooming School. There I received a hands-on education along with an in-depth education on more than just haircuts. This school taught the importance of being educated on how to care for the different styles of coats, the different skin conditions, parasites and proper de-matting techniques. I received my PIJAC Canine Specialist Certificate, as well as my PIJAC (now known as Pets Canada) Dog Talk Attestation Certificate. Through Western Dog Grooming School, I completed my 12-week practicum. Received my Professional Grooming Career Diploma from WDGS. Also receiving my WDGS Canine First Aid Certificate. I am now working towards my CPPS certificates to become a master groomer. I have also completed my level 1 anesthesia free canine dental training. I worked as a chairside dental assistant for almost 3 years. Before returning to working with animals. Making the transition from human dental to canine dental less of a challenge.

So true. Beautifully put.

Pets, it turns out, also have last wishes before they die, but only known by veterinarians who put old and sick animals to sleep. Twitter user Jesse Dietrich asked a vet what was the most difficult part of his job.
The specialist answered without hesitation that it was the hardest for him to see how old or sick animals look for their owners with the eyes of their owners before going to sleep. The fact is that 90 % of owners don't want to be in a room with a dying animal. People leave so that they don't see their pet leave. But they don't realize that it's in these last moments of life that their pet needs them most.
Veterinarians ask the owners to be close to the animals until the very end. "It's inevitable that they die before you. Don't forget that you were the center of their life. Maybe they were just a part of you. But they are also your family. No matter how hard it is, don't leave them.
Don't let them die in a room with a stranger in a place they don't like. It is very painful for veterinarians to see how pets cannot find their owner during the last minutes of their life. They don't understand why the owner left them. After all, they needed their owner’s consolation.
Veterinarians do everything possible to ensure that animals are not so scared, but they are completely strangers to them. Don't be a coward because it's too painful for you. Think about the pet. Endure this pain for the sake of their sake. Be with them until the end."

Beau was happy to get his deshed done, but ready to hit the road when we were done. He takes his treats and then helps himself to his leash while he waits for mom to pick him up.

It is always fun when I get a chance to do creative grooming on one of our own dogs. Brandy absolutely loves having a spa day and being groomed. Of all our dogs, she is the one that will come get me and take me to the groom room when she wants brushed. She loves to prance around the rest of the day showing off her groom. This colour theme was done for my brother who likes sonic.

Its true. It is important to ask questions.

Did you know that pet grooming is a completely unregulated industry? There is no requirement for formal education, no required continuing education, and no required testing or certification?

Anyone and everyone can just pick up a pair of clippers and start advertising themselves as a groomer and charge people for a service they aren’t trained to perform.

It’s completely up to you, the owner, to do your research and make sure the person you are trusting with the health and safety of your pet is qualified to care for them.

Every groomer should be trained, and that very basic training takes months.

It takes years to truly master the ins and outs of grooming and everything that goes along with it.

Pet grooming is so much more than just a hair style.

*It’s knowing dog behavior and how to safely handle all the different personalities and quirks.

*It’s recognizing health conditions that would be better suited seeing a vet such as skin or ear infections.

*It’s being prepared for any and all emergencies that can happen, from seizures to allergic reactions, to nicks and cuts and quicked toenails without panicking.

*It’s knowing how to best deal with a variety of coat types properly.

*It’s being able to know when to stop a service on a particular dog due to behavior or health.

*It’s having the knowledge and patience to handle a different species while holding razor sharp clippers or 8 inch long scissors.

At the very least, the groomer you use should seek out continuing education to make sure they are current on the changes in the industry, from upgrades in products to tools that make the process easier for the pet and them.

They should be current on their pet cpr/first aid certification which needs repeated every couple of years.

They should be able to answer your grooming related questions with knowledge and confidence and if they don’t know the answer they should know where to find it.

They should have an emergency plan in place with a local veterinarian in case anything happens, because when working with animals it’s not a matter of if something happens, but when.

They should come recommended by other pet owners and pet professionals.

And it’s worth noting that there is nothing wrong with using a groomer that is still in training, but they should be working alongside an experienced groomer and under their direct supervision.

Ask the questions, after all you are paying them for a service. A groomer who has spent time and money to be as educated as possible is excited to share their knowledge!
