🐾 Let’s Talk Coat Care (Dogs & Cats)! 🐾
We’ve had quite a few matted pets coming into the shop lately, and we need to clear up a common misconception!
Lately, we’ve heard comments like, "My dog is matted because you were booked solid and couldn’t get us in sooner." While we love how much you want to get on our schedule, a busy calendar isn't what causes severe matting—a lack of regular home brushing is. Professional grooming is meant to maintain a coat, but the daily/weekly routine care happens between visits at home.
Can groomers really tell?
Yes, we absolutely can!
The "Overnight" Myth: Tangles can happen quickly, but true matting takes weeks—and often months—of friction, moisture, and unbrushed shedding. That pelt-like matting didn't form over the last few days, no matter how fast it seems to have appeared!
Surface Brushing vs. Line Brushing: We can tell when a dog was brushed right before walking through our doors. A quick brush over the top leaves the coat fluffy on top while tight matting remains packed solid right against the skin.
Skin & Trapped Dirt: Matts trap dirt, dander, and moisture against the skin over long periods. The condition of the skin underneath tells us the whole story.
A Quick Note on Cats 🐱
We also want to share a firm policy regarding our feline friends: We will not shave a cat for vanity or purely cosmetic reasons.
A cat’s coat isn't just for looks—it serves vital biological functions, and shaving a cat unless it is medically necessary (such as severe, pelleted matting) can do far more harm than good:
Temperature Regulation: A cat’s coat acts as natural insulation, protecting them from both heat and cold. Shaving them ruins their body’s ability to regulate temperature naturally.
Skin Damage & Stress: Feline skin is exceptionally thin and sensitive. Shaving puts them at high risk for razor burn, ingrown hairs, sun damage, and stress.
Psychological Impact: Cats rely heavily on their coat for sensory input and protection. Shaving them unnecessarily can cause significant anxiety and behavioral shifts.
If your cat is getting small tangles, regular combing at home is the best solution—shaving is a last-resort welfare measure, not a summer haircut!
We say all of this because we care deeply about your pets' health and comfort. If our books are full, a few minutes of daily brushing with a slicker brush and metal comb will keep your furry companion tangle-free.
