Meet Our Founders: Dr. Becky Craig

BayVETS Urgent Care Collingwood was founded by a group of local veterinarians who recognized the need for accessible, extended after-hours care for their own patients, while also wanting to make urgent veterinary care available to any pet in need when their family veterinarian is closed.

By bringing together the Founders Group’s experience and resources, we created BayVETS Urgent Care Collingwood, a collaborative urgent care service for illnesses and conditions that simply can’t wait. Open seven days a week, BayVETS offers the accessibility of a human after-hours walk-in clinic, supported by the veterinary resources needed to investigate and treat urgent concerns, including in-house bloodwork, X-rays, ultrasound, endoscopy and surgery.

We’d like to introduce you to another of the founders of BayVETS Urgent Care Collingwood, Dr. Becky Craig.

Dr. Becky graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College and began her veterinary career in Edmonton, Alberta, where she worked in both small animal practice and emergency medicine. In 2016, she returned home to Collingwood to be closer to family and continued working at local veterinary hospitals, as well as an emergency clinic in Barrie.

In 2023, Becky opened her own family practice, Long Beach Veterinary Hospital. As her practice grew, she recognized the need for accessible after-hours veterinary care in the community. She was excited to come together with her local veterinary colleagues and combine their experience and resources to create BayVETs.

Becky has thoroughly enjoyed being part of the BayVETs journey and watching local veterinary teams come together. She is proud of the collaborative spirit that has developed among the clinics and the opportunity to provide the community with a dedicated place for pets to receive care when they need it most.

When she’s not at the clinic, Becky loves spending time with her kids. Her favourite places to be are at the beach, running through the Blue Mountains, or cheering on her kids from the sidelines of the soccer field.

Allergic reactions can happen quickly and may progress faster than expected.

Watch for facial or muzzle swelling, puffiness around the eyes, hives, vomiting, diarrhea, difficulty breathing, weakness or collapse. Reactions may be triggered by insect bites or stings, medications, vaccines, food or contact with another substance.

If you notice sudden swelling or other signs of an allergic reaction, contact a veterinary clinic promptly. Difficulty breathing, weakness or collapse require immediate emergency care. Do not give medication unless directed by a veterinarian.

When your family veterinarian is closed, BayVETS Urgent Care Collingwood is here to help.

What is an echocardiogram?

An echocardiogram is a specialized ultrasound of the heart. It allows us to assess the heart’s chambers, valves, structure, pumping function and blood flow in real time.

Echocardiography can provide valuable information when investigating:

• Heart murmurs
• Irregular heart rhythms
• Coughing or breathing changes
• Exercise intolerance
• Suspected or previously diagnosed heart disease

At BayVETS Urgent Care Collingwood, we adapt the examination to each patient. Sometimes that means bringing the ultrasound equipment to them and even sitting on the floor so they can remain in a position and environment where they feel most comfortable.💙🐾

🎣 What should you do if your pet swallows a fish hook?

Fish hooks can become lodged in a pet’s mouth, esophagus or stomach and may cause significant damage if they are not removed promptly.

If your pet swallows a fish hook:

• Do not pull or cut the fishing line. If it can be safely protected, the remaining line may help with locating and removing the hook.
• Prevent your pet from chewing or pawing at the line.
• Do not offer food or induce vomiting.
• Seek veterinary care promptly.

Fish hooks show up clearly on X-rays, helping veterinarians determine their location. A hook lodged in the mouth may sometimes be removed with sedation. If it is farther down in the esophagus or stomach, endoscopy is often the treatment of choice and may allow the hook to be removed without surgery.

At BayVETS Urgent Care Collingwood, we believe pet owners should always be part of the conversation. 💙

Our role is to assess what’s happening, explain the options clearly, answer questions, and help you understand what each option means for your pet. From there, we work together to find a plan that makes sense for both your pet and your family.

We know that urgent veterinary visits can be stressful. That’s why we believe in open conversations about care, including priorities, options and costs.

No pressure. No guilt. Full transparency. Just thoughtful veterinary care when you need it.

Thank you, Karen, for sharing your experience with us. We’re so glad to hear your dog is doing amazing.
