Are you ready for a dog?

There are many things to be considered before you get a dog. Yes, they are cute and cuddly and will be your new best friend but dogs also have needs that you must prepare to meet. Getting a dog is much like having a child—a dog will need care, attention, and discipline just like a child does. You will also have to make changes to your life and home to make sure that the dog is safe and well cared for. If you are considering getting a dog, ask yourself the following questions.

1)Do you have enough time?

Dogs are social animals and will not be happy if they are left alone in the backyard. They thrive when included into the family dynamics. You will need plenty of time to train, play with and exercise. This will strengthen the bond between you and the dog.

2) Do you have enough space?

A dog needs room to run and play, even if taken on several walks a day. Consider carefully which breed best suits your lifestyle and space.

3) Can you afford to become a dog owner?

Dogs can be expensive! The average dog lives 10-13yrs. The cost to raise a health dog for 10yrs is roughly $12.000. Remember dogs need collars, leashes,food, dishes, a crate, vet care, obedience/behavioural training and licensing.

Finding the right breeder and putting the work into any dog you own is important.

While we all love seeing movies centred around dogs, they do tend to drive the popularity of such breeds.

Example like 101 Dalmatians saw a huge rise in backyard breed Dals and the shelters become over run with them. The same happened with the Malinois as the breed stared in two different movies.

Let’s hope this doesn’t happen with the GSD. This is where buyer beware comes to play.
