A new Chatham business is offering a water-based alternative to cremation for family pets that have passed away.
Furever Aquamation opened on April 7 at 89 Queen St. Owner-operator Nora Klinck recently learned about aquamation for humans and realized the closet aquamation service for pets in Southwestern Ontario, to her knowledge, is the Kitchener/Waterloo area.
“I just started researching and came up with the idea of opening pet aquamation so that our pet families in Chatham and surrounding area have an option,” she said.
Furever Aquamation serves Chatham-Kent, Windsor-Essex and Sarnia-Lambton.
Klinck takes the time to meet with pet families to discuss options.
“Pets are family members, so the grief is very real for the owners,” she said.
Furever Aquamation goes to wherever the pet has passed away, either at home or at vet clinic or animal hospital, she said.
Some people want to stay with their pet as long as possible so she offers them the opportunity to participate in the transfer, she said.
“I really want this business to serve our pet families in a way that makes sense to them,” she said.
The aquamation cycle, which uses water, heat and alkalinity, takes about 18 to 20 hours. But Klinck said it takes about five to seven days before the remains are ready to be returned to families, because skeletal remains are processed into a powder.
She said there are two types of aquamation offered, individual or communal.
Individual aquamation is for pet families that want to keep the remains.
The business also offers a variety of urns.
More details about the services offered are available online at www.fureveraquamation.ca.
Klinck has met with area veterinarian and animal hospitals to let them know she is offering this service.
If aquamation is something pet owners want, she said it is important they mention it to their vet or contact the business at 519-352-7225 and she will help with the process.
