🚨Attention - Perth Fair Attendees, that are attending the Royal Winter Fair 🚨

Following the recent positive Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) case, we’re asking anyone whose horse attended the Perth Fair and is planning to attend the Royal to plan ahead for testing.

Please arrange to have your horse’s Coggins test (EIA blood test) drawn on October 28 or 29.

This timing allows 45 days to pass following potential exposure at the Perth Fair and should allow sufficient time for results to return before horses head to the Royal.

📞 Please contact our office to schedule your horse’s blood draw!

Thank you for your cooperation and for helping keep our equine community healthy and safe. ❤️🐴

We want to inform our clients about Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) following a positive result in the Tay Valley area. CFIA has now confirmed through secondary testing that it is a true positive.

EIA is a viral disease of horses, ponies, donkeys and mules. There is no vaccine or cure, and infected horses can carry the virus for life.

🦟 How is EIA spread?
EIA is primarily transmitted through blood, most commonly by biting flies such as horse flies and deer flies. It can also be spread through contaminated needles, syringes, dental equipment or other blood-contaminated instruments.

🐴 What can you do to protect your horse?
• Avoid sharing needles, syringes or equipment between horses
• Practice good biosecurity when travelling or bringing new horses onto your property
• Be cautious around horses of unknown EIA status
• Consider EIA testing, especially before moving horses or introducing new horses to your farm
• Use proper fly control to help reduce the risk of transmission

Horses with EIA may show fever, weakness, weight loss, swelling, anemia or poor performance, but some infected horses may show no obvious signs at all.

If you have concerns about EIA or would like to discuss testing for your horse, please contact our clinic. 🐴❤️

Stay informed, practice good biosecurity, and help protect the horses in our community.

Equine infectious anemia (EIA) is a potentially fatal blood-borne infectious viral disease that produces a persistent infection among equids nearly worldwide.

Fall Deworming Reminder! 🐴🪱

As the seasons change, it’s time to make sure your horses are protected from unwanted parasites before winter sets in!

🍂Why deworm in the fall?
After months on pasture, horses often carry higher parasite loads. Deworming now helps reduce contamination before winter and keeps your herd healthy.

💉 What to target:
Fall deworming focuses on bots and strongyles — often using products that contain ivermectin or moxidectin, sometimes paired with praziquantel to control tapeworms.

❄️ Best timing:
After the first hard frost, when bot flies are no longer active.

Call us today to discuss your fall deworming protocol. 📞613-703-0272

🚨Understanding Choke In Horses🚨

Choke is a common and sometimes scary emergency in horses, caused when food material becomes stuck in the esophagus, unlike in humans, where choking refers to an obstruction in the trachea resulting in the inability to breathe.

The most common signs of choke are:
- Feed material coming from the nostrils
- Hypersalivation
- Coughing
- Retching
- Acting colicky

What to do if you think your horse is choking:
- Stay calm
- Remove all food and water from the horse
- Call your veterinarian immediately!
- Keep the horse in a quiet and safe space

Prevention Tips:
- Feed soaked grain materials
- Keep dental care up to date
- Always allow access to water

Stay informed, stay prepared and keep your horses happy and healthy💚🐴
