Oh Shrek, you are such a ham! 😂🐾 How is it possible that you seem to double in size between every Puppy Kindergarten class?!

For those who don’t know, Shrek is a Leonberger — a truly giant breed with an even bigger heart! ❤️

🐶 Leonberger fun facts:

✨ Originally bred in Germany as working and companion dogs.
✨ Males can weigh well over 100 lbs (45+ kg), with some reaching 170 lbs (77 kg) or more!
✨ Despite their impressive size, they’re known for being gentle, patient, and wonderful family dogs.
✨ Leonbergers love water and are excellent swimmers.
✨ They were historically used for cart pulling, water rescue, and farm work.

We absolutely love having you in class, Shrek! Keep up the amazing work, big guy🐾❤️

🐾 Struggling to teach your dog a reliable recall around squirrels, rabbits, or moving distractions? Here are 4 fun impulse control games you can play to build focus and self-control! 🎯

1️⃣ Excite/Settle
Juno is only allowed to chase the toy when I say "Get it!" 🧸 When the toy disappears, she must sit calmly and wait for the game to start again.

2️⃣ Wait
I throw the toy, but Juno must stay put until she hears "Get it!" 🐕💨 Learning that patience pays off!

3️⃣ Look-At-That
Juno watches as I move the flirt pole away from her 👀. After practicing self-control, she earns the chance to chase it when I finally say "Get it!" 🎉

4️⃣ Distracted Recall
I throw a ball, then call Juno back before she reaches it 🎾. Her reward? A fun game of tug! 🪢

These games help build the impulse control needed for a strong recall—even when distractions are tempting! 💪🐾

Did you know that sniffing is a biological need for dogs? 👃🐶 It provides incredible mental stimulation, helps tire them out both mentally and physically, and is one of the best ways for dogs to decompress and relax.

Many dog owners struggle to find places where their dogs can exercise and explore without running into a million triggers. 🚶‍♀️⚠️

For those who don't know, my younger dog, Indy, is dog-reactive. Because of that, when we go on "sniffaris" in the city, I look for locations where we're unlikely to encounter other dogs. Recently, we explored an industrial area—and it was perfect! 🏭✨ There were plenty of new sights, sounds, and smells to investigate, but no dogs around.

So for your next sniffari, think outside the box! 🌎🐾 If a walk in your neighbourhood is too stressful for your dog, consider industrial areas, commercial districts, quiet business parks, or forested trails. Your dog will thank you for the chance to explore, relax, and just be a dog. ❤️

🎯 Hand Targets! 💕

There are SO many great reasons to teach your dog a “touch,” or hand target! 🐾 It’s such a simple skill, but it can go a long way in everyday life and training.

Some of the biggest benefits of teaching “touch” include:

✨ Recall! Having your dog come to you and touch your hand is a fun and engaging way to build a stronger recall. The more enjoyable recall is, the more effective it becomes!

✨ Response to Name. Pairing your dog’s name with a fun game like “touch” helps create an extremely positive association to hearing their name.

✨ Play & Interaction. Hand targets are a great way to play and engage with your dog, helping strengthen your bond and relationship overall.

✨ Body Placement. Hand targets are an excellent way to guide your dog into positions without relying on a food lure, which can help avoid issues with dogs only responding when treats are visible.

There are so many amazing reasons to teach this skill, and it’s one we love incorporating into training! 🐶💛

Over the May long weekend, we headed up to our family cottage — one of our favourite places to relax, unwind, and spend quality time together. ☀️🚤

One of our favourite activities while we’re up there is family boat rides… and of course, Indy and Kobe are always part of the adventure! 🐾

It’s really important to us that our dogs have the skills needed to safely and calmly participate in family activities like this. One of the biggest skills I talk about in all of my classes is “The Art of Doing Nothing.”

From a young age, we expose our dogs to different environments, distractions, and situations, while teaching them how to simply relax and take in the world around them.

Fast forward to today — at 3 and 6 years old — they absolutely love joining us on the boat, visiting the marina for a pup cup, and stopping by neighbours’ docks along the way. 🐶💛

I’m so proud of these two and so grateful to have them included in all of our family adventures.
