Rabies remains uncommon in B.C., and public health experts closely monitor trends across the province. Finding a single rabies-positive bat does not indicate an unusual event, as bats are a natural part of our local ecosystem and a small number may carry rabies.
There are currently no known rabies cases in humans in BC. The last human case of rabies in BC was in 2019.
The best protection is prevention: ✅ Do not handle bats. ✅ Keep pets' rabies vaccinations up to date. ✅ Seek medical advice if you think a person may have had contact with a bat.
For more information, visit the BC Centre for Disease Control website Rabies. https://www.bccdc.ca/health-info/diseases-conditions/rabies
If you have come into DIRECT CONTACT with a bat please contact your health care provider or Island Health’s North Island Communicable Disease Hub at 250-331-8555 See less

It's National Kitten Day! What better day than today to showcase a trio of kittens that were brought to our hospital in dire straits. These little furballs were found on someone's property, with no mother cat in sight, and sadly, one sibling had already been lost. They were starving, dehydrated, and covered in fleas. The orange boy among them was in particularly rough shape and on the brink of giving up. Thankfully, they were taken in by CRPAWS and fostered by one of our dedicated assistants.

Their care has been quite intensive, requiring bottle feeding every three hours—even throughout the night—along with dextrose, subcutaneous fluids, and assistance with urination and bowel movements. The orange kitten had a tough first week, and we feared we might lose him, but he eventually turned a corner and showed a remarkable will to live.

Now, they have transformed into a sweet and affectionate bunch, and we can’t wait to watch them continue to grow. The orange boy will be staying with his foster, who has formed a strong bond with him after going through this journey together.

To celebrate National Kitten Day, we’d love for you to share photos of your own cats and kittens! Whether they’re rescue stories full of resilience or just your everyday moments of joy, let’s come together and spread the love for our feline friends.
