Your dog doesn’t have to be injured to benefit from massage.

Just like us, dogs can carry tension in their muscles from everyday activity, stress, sleeping in awkward positions, or simply the way they move. Massage can help support relaxation, mobility and muscle comfort.

For me, watching a dog completely relax into a massage is one of my favourite parts of what I do 💚🐾!

I offer mobile canine massage in Cambridge and surrounding areas.

3 Neck Massage Techniques 🐶

Did you know dogs can carry a lot of tension in their neck muscles?

Here are 3 easy techniques you can try at home:

1️⃣ Slow, long strokes
Start with gentle, flowing strokes to warm up the muscles and help increase blood flow.

2️⃣ Friction
Use small, controlled back and forth movements over areas that feel tight to help loosen the muscle.

3️⃣ Shaking
A gentle shaking motion can help the muscles let go and encourage relaxation.

Remember, massage should always feel good for your dog. Keep the pressure comfortable and watch their body language as you go. 🐾

Sometimes a few minutes of gentle massage is all it takes to help your dog relax and feel a little more comfortable.

Tidy Feet 🐾!! They are so important in a dog’s ability to control its own movement, especially on slippery floors in the home (think hardwood, vinyl, etc.)

Tidy feet are critical and helpful to all dogs ranging from the injured pup to the senior pup to the zoomies-around-the-house pup 💨. It gives them more ability to control their movement and minimizes slipping and possibly hurting themselves. It also helps them get up more easily from a laying down position.

Tidy feet means

1️⃣ trimmed nails
2️⃣ trimmed fur around & under the paws.

If you can’t manage it yourself, find a gentle and knowledgeable groomer who can help 💚.

Study season is upon me, and I’m excited! This time next month, I’ll have begun a 6-week professional equine massage therapy course 🙌🐴, adding a new therapeutic skill to the toolbox.

In the meantime, I’m prepping my knowledge of horse anatomy - thankfully drawing is not a requirement 🤣!

If you’ve ever wondered what a canine massage session looks like, I thought I’d share a little more about what you can expect with FourMotion Wellness.

Every dog is different, so I don’t follow the exact same routine with every session. I take the time to get to know the dog, listen to their history, and observe how they move before beginning hands-on work.

Some dogs are comfortable right away. Others need a little more time to settle in. Both are completely okay.

I pay attention to each dog’s body language and response throughout the session and adjust as needed. Sometimes that means changing a technique, taking a break, or simply giving them a little more time.

There’s no expectation that a dog has to be a certain way for a massage session. They’re allowed to be themselves.

If you’ve been wondering whether canine massage might be a good fit for your dog, you’re always welcome to reach out and talk to me about what you’re noticing.

I’ve always been fascinated by how the body moves and adapts.

Before becoming a canine massage therapist, I spent many years teaching science in adult education. I loved helping people understand anatomy, movement, and the “why” behind how things work.

That curiosity eventually led me to canine massage therapy. It has been a meaningful way to combine my love of science, learning, and animals.

One of the things I appreciate most about this work is that every dog is different. They each have their own history, personality, and way of moving.

Before a session begins, I take the time to listen, observe, and understand the dog in front of me. I believe thoughtful care starts with taking the time to understand the individual.

Our dogs show us so much through the way they move, the activities they enjoy, and the small changes we may notice over time.

Learning to notice these small changes can help us better understand the dogs who share our lives.

Have you noticed your dog slowing down a little? 🐾

Maybe they’re taking a little longer to get up after resting, moving differently on walks, hesitating with stairs, or not quite enjoying the activities they used to love.

These changes can happen gradually, and sometimes we don’t notice them until our dogs aren’t moving quite the way they used to.

Canine massage therapy is one way to support your dog’s overall wellness by promoting comfort, relaxation, and mobility.

I created this post to help you learn more about canine massage therapy and how it may support your dog.

Every dog is unique, and their care should be too. 💚

🐾Hind leg massage can be a great way to support relaxation and can improve healing in injury. But, it’s not appropriate for every situation.

When in doubt, check with your veterinarian or a certified canine massage therapist.

💚If you’re thinking of massaging your pup’s hind legs, here’s are 3 things to consider:

1️⃣ Don’t massage if there is:
- limping
- swelling
- heat
- recent injury

2️⃣ Hind legs are sensitive and need gentle care:
- avoid joints
- use light to moderate pressure
- watch your dog’s body language

3️⃣ Safe techniques for healthy dogs:
- long strokes that go down the leg and end going back up the leg
- gentle circles (small or big)
- follow the muscle

🐶 Remember we never force it but always put the dog’s comfort, safety and wellness first!

🐶If you are unsure about whether massage is appropriate for your dog, consult a local certified canine massage therapist 💚.
