Resource guarding. Does your dog guard toys, bones or people? The simplest way to manage this is with 1 rule. If your dog guards it they lose it. If they guard a toy they lose it for a period of time. If they guard a person that person ignores them for a period of time. If every time your dog guards something they lose the privilege of having that something they will correct their own behaviour. No yelling and harsh discipline needed. Also ask why they are guarding in the first place. Are they constantly being bothered when they are trying to enjoy a bone? Can they sit in peace and relax without being inundated by people or other animals? Dogs deserve space to enjoy themselves too.

This guy never ceases to amaze me and his latest update showed me how truly healing dogs are. As we know Petrie had a difficult past with an extensive bite history. Although he’s much better he’s still wary of new people. Today he was the perfect boy. A young boy under 3 who’s non verbal wanted to give Petrie a treat. Petrie’s owner and person made it happen. In that magical moment a formerly aggressive dog laid perfectly calm as a little boy held out his hand. For the first time ever that little boy said “here go” and gentle Petrie took the treat and gave him a kiss on the hand. A boy who spoke his first ever words, believed by everyone that he would never be able to speak and a little dog who showed us all that under that fear is a gentle soul that wants to be loved and show love. This is why we never give up and never leave a dog behind.

Remember this guy? It’s been a while but I’m happy to say Mr. Petrie has been adopted. It’s been a few months and here’s his update. Petrie is doing amazing meeting new people. Everyone in the building comments on his strut. He loves my grandchildren and we go on adventures together. We hang out at music night and he’s absolutely perfect. He’s very spoiled and very loved! Petrie’s start was being rescued from euthanization for human aggression. It took time and love and a community of people to rally around him. But he’s proof no dog is worth leaving behind.

Two things to say about this photo. First off, training never stops even including the moment you get out of the shower. Second, this is the first time Petrie let me pick him up. It has taken months to earn this kind of trust with him. Not giving up and working with your dogs boundaries and pushing them ever so gently will always yield amazing results. I’m proud of this little guy!

It’s been a while since I’ve posted about Petrie. He’s doing well! He’s amalgamated into my home well with my other dogs. He doesn’t seem to mind the cats and is really starting to show who he really is. Behind every aggressive dog is fear. We combat fear with love, patience and good direction! I don’t think it will be long now before he’s ready to go up for adoption with Moe Dog Rescue Mission!

As of November 1 I’ll no longer be available for walks. I’m working full time at Dogvana here in Okotoks so please check them out. They are a great facility for dog boarding, daycare, training and grooming. For those of you I haven’t messaged I’ve got some options for some really great people who can continue working with your dogs so please shoot me a message and I’ll give you their contact info!

Let’s talk dog daycare. It’s important for your dog to regularly socialize with other dogs. This helps prevent future reactivity while maintaining good dog social skills. Even once a week is a benefit for your dog. Dog parks can help with this but the unregulated nature of who attends those parks leaves the quality of the interactions between your dogs and other dogs debatable.
