There are moments in this career where your heart explodes with joy when a dog demonstrates something they previously struggled with, with so much confidence.

Oliver is an extremely loving, happy boy who is lacking in confidence and can be triggered into barking when he hears sounds, especially when he’s startled or unsure.

His guardian has been doing amazing work implementing different strategies aimed at building his confidence and resiliency. We’ve specifically been implementing LAT (look at that) created by the incredible Kim Brophey and building a “disengagement ladder” to assist him with disengaging from a situation when he is struggling to do it himself. We’ve introduced the “Touch” cue and today, Oliver demonstrated his skills with it- not only in a different environment, but also with a very loud vehicle distraction right outside! You can see him acknowledge the sound, but then refocus on the task. He has made such incredible strides with his ability to disengage from stressors and it is so amazing to see his confidence grow. I cannot wait to see what else these two accomplish together!

Before anyone panics, we’re not saying dogs don’t need exercise.

We’re saying that during an extreme heat event, there are many days when the safest, kindest, and most responsible choice is to skip the walk altogether.

Heat stress doesn’t only happen when dogs are visibly struggling. It can happen gradually, especially in puppies, seniors, brachycephalic dogs, dogs with mobility concerns, anxious dogs, and working dogs.

Today’s challenge:
Instead of asking, “How do I tire my dog out?”
Try asking, “How do I help my dog feel comfortable, safe, and fulfilled?”

That might look like:
💧 Water play and swimming
🧊 Frozen enrichment
🐾 Sniffing games and scent work
🏠 Indoor training sessions
🦴 Long-lasting chews and enrichment activities
💛 Rest, recovery, and simply spending time together

Remember: a good day for your dog isn’t measured by how many kilometres you walked. Sometimes, it’s measured by knowing when to slow down.

Meet Nicole 👋

For Nicole, this work has always been about connection.

Connection between dogs and their guardians.

Connection between behaviour and wellbeing.

And connection between people and the support systems that help them navigate life more confidently.

As Co-Founder of Thrive Canine Services, Nicole brings more than 10 years of experience working with puppies, behaviour cases, and service dog teams. Her work is rooted in the belief that behaviour is communication and that every dog deserves to be understood as an individual.

Drawing from both her professional experience and her lived experience as a service dog handler, Nicole is passionate about helping dogs and humans build stronger relationships through understanding, compassion, and practical support.

This summer, she’s excited to share more of the knowledge, stories, and experiences that have shaped her approach to behaviour and service dog coaching.
