Khan & Chloe’s Weekly Roundup ✨️

Khan & Chloe are both working on their recall. Chloe tends to either come running in and goes past me, or diverts to sniff on the approach which can be common at the start when teaching recall, especially for young dogs who are easily distracted. The aim is for her to stop at my feet! 🗣👣

Khan is familiar with recalls & great with his pawrents who he trusts, but because he worries about his environment and is always on alert, he’ll only come to me if no humans or dogs are around, so I’m carefully picking my moments when to call him in to help him succeed & build his trust.

Chloe’s working on:
➡️ Leash manners - getting better!
➡️ Excitement & impulse control.
➡️ Focus & disengagement when she sees other dogs and is too focused on them due to excitement! 🤩
➡️ Anxiety whilst travelling - keeping trips short for now.
➡️ Prey drive - cats, squirrels, chipmunks & large birds!

To help Khan I am working on:
➡️ Helping him to feel safe in his environment, especially around distractions.
➡️ Boosting his confidence by adding interactive games to trigger his excitement!
➡️ Letting him choose our route on neighborhood walks as he’s nervous & hyper-vigilant.
➡️ Prey drive - cats, squirrels, chipmunks & large birds - he disengages with prompts.

It was really lovely to see my old boy have some playtime with Chloe this week! They quite like each other, the flirts! 😍

A Training Walk with Max 🩵🐕

Max is such a smart little guy and catches on very quickly! I have to up my game & bring out some extra tools from my training toolkit to challenge his smart brain! 🧠💡

Max is working on:
➡️ His redirected aggression when he becomes frustrated, stressed & triggered by non-friendly dogs! (Max can be dog selective).
➡️ Calmly observing (from a safe distance) & passing other dogs without pulling or lunging! With calm/friendly dogs he becomes over excited, which can lead to stress in some instances!
➡️ Gentle collar or harness holds to work on light pressure & restraint.
➡️ Counter-conditioning to gain his attention around distractions, especially around unfamiliar dogs & barky dogs!
➡️ Loose leash walking.
➡️ Recall - seeing some improvement in no to low distraction areas - leading to distraction areas.
➡️ Working on settling.
➡️ Prey drive! Max's breed (Wire Fox Terrier) were bred originally for hunting, specifically to chase foxes into their dens, so I don't want to work against his strong instincts to track, search, stalk, chase, etc. So I will be replacing his strong predatory drive with some fun exercises to offer him an outlet for his skills.
(Max's tracking in a trail today eventually led us to a porcupine resting up in a tree! Max didn't see it thankfully!!).

Max did so great today with the heat, which is quite stressful on a dogs nervous system! We finished training a bit early to give Max a break and he did some scent work in my shady yard and he got more water & treats. He was a tired teddy afterwards. 🐶💤

Frankie's Weekly Roundup ✨️

As the weather heats up, it's going to be a struggle for poor Frankie who doesn't do so well in hot weather due to her broad head & short muzzle (known as brachycephalic breeds). It's not feasible walking Frankie first thing when it's cooler, so we'll be seeking out shady spots, water spots and doing some indoor activities to offer her relief from the sun. ☀️🥵

The only positive side to hot weather for Frankie is she gets ice-cream and she now enjoys going into water to cool off!! 🍦💦

I dog-sat these little fluff balls recently; Ollie & Ella, my neighbor's dogs.

Although I do offer dog-sitting and the ocassional boarding for the right dog(s) as we have a calm senior dog at home, I only offer dog-sitting to my friends, neighbors, and clients dogs currently. They are familiar with me and feel comfortable in my presence, and I know them fairly well and know their needs and routine.

Ice-cream on a hot day! 🍦☀️

I didn't think Frankie would eat it all, but she proved me wrong!! 😂

DOG GROOMING & SHAVING! ⚠️

With the weather hotting up, here are some reasons why it's not recommended to shave our dogs in the hot summer months. ☀️🐕

➡️ A dog's coat helps them to regulate their temperature & protects the skin!
➡️ Thick coats trap cool air & help to release heat. Fur acts as insulation in both hot & cold weather.
➡️ The fur helps to block the sun & stops the skin from getting sunburned.
➡️ Shaving the fur removes the natural sun barrier! Exposing dogs to UV rays, sunburn, heatstroke, skin damage & a higher risk of over heating!
➡️ Instead of shaving, give them a light trim, brush regularly to get rid of loose fur, which also releases their natural oils.
➡️ Don’t over expose them to the sun. Keep them in shade with free access to water and cool airflow.
➡️ Let the coat do what it is supposed to do - protect them from the sun!

Frankie's getting a bit too good at predicting when I'm going to call her in!

She really enjoys interaction, but I also want her to have some independence and free time on our walks so she's not always 'switched on & ready for action!'. I also add a cue at the end of each exercise "All done!" so she knows that the exercise is over and she's free to go roam!

Sit/Stay 🙌💫

Frankie is getting very good at these! We're able to increase the distance & duration of the stay.

Clever girl 👏💗

Khan & Chloe's Weekly Roundup 💫

Both dogs are doing well. Chloe is working on her leash manners - walking calmly on leash as she's an excited girl and likes to get everywhere fast!! She's easily distracted! 🤩

Khan is a sensitive boy and gets anxious around distractions, including humans and other dogs and moving large vehicles! So I'm working with him to boost his confidence around distractions and help him to feel safe. He's an observer and notices everything in his environment! 👀 Often nervous, anxious, fearful, insecure dogs feel vulnerable when they're stationary for more than a few seconds, so they like to keep moving. When you keep moving you feel safer and are harder to find!

Both dogs are working on recall and prey drive, especially around small critters, which trigger excitement & chasing! 🐿

They're starting to know who I am and get excited when I arrive, which is always a nice welcome. 🤗💞

Frankie's Weekly Roundup! ✨️

Frankie's had a busy week of exploring, sniffing, interactive games, visiting stores, climbing & balancing, playing treat tree!, scent work, greeting humans and dogs, calmly observing squirrels, ball play and doing some fun training. 💫🙌

She's a clever girl 💗
