🤯🍌 DID YOU KNOW BANANA TREES AREN'T ACTUALLY TREES?!

Good morning everyone, and welcome back to Canadian Veggie Grower!! ☀️🌴💚

Today's Morning Featured Plant is our beautiful Dwarf Cavendish Banana!

And yes, we're growing this tropical beauty right here in Ontario, Canada! 🇨🇦🌿

Now here's something really cool about banana plants!

🌴 THEY AREN'T ACTUALLY TREES!

Believe it or not, banana plants are giant herbaceous plants! What looks like a trunk is actually a pseudostem made up of tightly overlapping leaf bases!

🍌 ONE BUNCH PER STEM!

Each banana pseudostem typically produces one bunch of bananas before eventually dying back.

🌱 BUT THE PLANT KEEPS GROWING!

Banana plants can produce new shoots called pups from their underground growing structure. These pups can eventually grow into mature plants themselves!

☀️ WHAT DO THEY LOVE?

Plenty of light, warmth, consistent moisture and rich, well-draining soil!

We're still waiting for our very first bananas, but watching this tropical beauty grow has been such an incredible experience! 🥰🍌

And honestly, who would've thought we'd be growing banana plants right here in Ontario, Canada?! 😂🇨🇦

That's what makes this whole growing adventure so much fun!

🌙🌴 Welcome back to Day 147 of our Nighttime Jungle Gander! 🇨🇦💚

As another chilly October evening settles over Ontario, our little tropical greenhouse continues to be our favourite escape!

Tonight we're taking another relaxing walk through the jungle, checking out our Florida Ghost Philodendron, Dwarf Cavendish banana, and orange Bird of Paradise. 🌿🍌

It's hard to believe how much this little greenhouse has grown and changed, and we're so grateful to have all of you following along!

🥶🌴 FREEZING OUTSIDE… TROPICAL PARADISE INSIDE!! 🇨🇦💚

Good morning everyone, and welcome back to Canadian Veggie Grower!! ☀️🌿

Well, it's another chilly morning here in Ontario!

🥶 Outside feels like −1°C!
🌴 Inside our tropical greenhouse? A beautiful 29°C!

Quite the difference!! 😂💚

And even with those colder temperatures outside, our little jungle is still growing!

Today's Morning Featured Plant is our beautiful Philodendron Florida Ghost! 👻🌿

Now here's something really cool about this tropical beauty!

Its new leaves can emerge almost completely white before gradually developing shades of green as they mature!

How incredible is that?! 🤯

And here's another interesting fact: the Florida Ghost is actually a climbing Philodendron! With proper support and growing conditions, it can develop larger, more mature leaves.

One of my favourite things about this entire greenhouse adventure is being able to grow and learn about plants like this right here in Ontario, Canada!

🌙🌴 DAY 146 ANOTHER EVENING IN OUR TROPICAL JUNGLE!! 💚🇨🇦

Good evening everyone, and welcome back to Canadian Veggie Grower!! 🥰🌿

Well, another day and another little adventure in the jungle! 👀🌴

The colder temperatures are definitely making themselves known here in Ontario, but inside our greenhouse, the tropical plants are still keeping us busy!

Tonight we're taking a relaxing little gander at some of the exciting things happening!

🌵 DRAGON FRUIT: We've got some beautiful new growth happening!

🍍 PINEAPPLE: Our pineapple continues to develop, and it's been such an incredible experience watching something we started from a grocery store pineapple crown get to this stage!

🌈 CROTON: Just look at those beautiful colours! Nature really is incredible!

🌿 BEGONIA SOLI-MUTATA: Another one of our beautiful foliage plants with such interesting leaf patterns!

🍂 LUFFAS: And of course, we couldn't finish without another little check-in on our outdoor luffas as we continue dealing with these colder nights!

146 nights of sharing our jungle adventures, and I still love stepping inside to see what's happening! 💚

Sometimes it's the smallest changes and new growth that make gardening so rewarding. 🌱🥰

🌿🤯 WOULD YOU BELIEVE THIS IS ACTUALLY A BEGONIA?!

Good morning, everyone, and welcome back to Canadian Veggie Grower! ☀️🌴💚

Today's Morning Featured Plant is our absolutely beautiful Begonia Gryphon!

Now, when most people think of begonias, they probably picture colourful flowers.

But this tropical-looking beauty has something completely different to show off… its incredible FOLIAGE! 🌿✨

Just look at those deeply cut leaves, silvery-green patterns and striking dark veins!

Here are a few fascinating facts!

🌿 GROWN FOR ITS LEAVES: Begonia Gryphon is prized for its dramatic foliage rather than its flowers.

🌱 UNIQUE LEAF SHAPES: Its deeply cut leaves give it an almost prehistoric appearance!

☀️ LIGHTING: Bright, indirect light helps keep this beauty looking its best.

💧 WATERING: It prefers well-draining soil and doesn't appreciate sitting in soggy conditions.

🌴 GROWTH: With proper care, this Begonia can develop into a beautiful, bushy statement plant!

One of my favourite things about growing tropical plants is discovering just how much variety nature has to offer.

And this beauty proves you don't need flowers to make an impression! 🥰💚

🌙🌴 DAY 145 ANOTHER PEACEFUL NIGHT IN OUR TROPICAL JUNGLE! 💚

Good evening, everyone, and welcome back to Canadian Veggie Grower! 🇨🇦🌿

Winter may be getting closer here in Ontario, but inside our little greenhouse, we're still surrounded by tropical greenery! 🌴🥰

After showing you how we prepare our greenhouse for winter earlier today, tonight we're slowing things down and enjoying another relaxing stroll through the jungle.

Tonight's tropicals include:

🌺 Our Orange Bird of Paradise
🍌 Our Dwarf Cavendish Banana
🌈 Our colourful Croton
🌴 Our White Bird of Paradise
🌿 Our Shampoo Ginger

Every one of these plants has its own story, and watching them grow through the changing seasons has been such an incredible experience!

145 nights later, and there's still something special about stepping inside this greenhouse at the end of the day. 💚

Sometimes you don't need anything fancy… just a little peace, some greenery and a moment to appreciate nature. 🌙🌱

❄️🌴 HOW DO WE KEEP OUR TROPICAL GREENHOUSE GOING THROUGH A CANADIAN WINTER?! 🇨🇦🥶

Well, everyone… you've been asking, and today we're taking you behind the scenes! 👀💚

Here in Angus, Ontario, our winters can be pretty unforgiving. But that hasn't stopped us from creating our very own tropical jungle!

So how do we keep everything going when the snow starts falling and temperatures drop well below freezing?

🏠 OUR WINTER FRAME: We built a separate exterior frame around our greenhouse and wrap it with multiple layers of plastic for added protection.

❄️ SNOW & ICE: We use WD-40 Specialist Silicone on suitable exterior surfaces to help reduce sticking and freezing, while continuing to monitor snow accumulation and structural loads.

🔥 HEATING: Our thermostat-controlled greenhouse heater helps maintain warm temperatures for our tropical plants.

💧 HUMIDITY: Our 15L AC Infinity humidifier has made maintaining tropical humidity so much easier compared with last winter!

☀️ LIGHTING: SunBlaster LED grow lights help supplement those shorter winter days.

🌬️ AIRFLOW: Circulation fans help keep air moving throughout our jungle.

And the results? 🍍🍌🍊

We're growing pineapples, bananas, citrus trees, dragon fruit and so many other tropical beauties right here in Ontario! 🌴💚

Is it always easy? Absolutely not! 😂

But every challenge teaches us something new, and watching this jungle continue growing makes all the hard work worthwhile!

⚠️ This is our personal setup, not a universal winter-proofing design. Proper electrical safety, ventilation, snow-load limits and regular monitoring are essential.

🍍🌴 GROWING A PINEAPPLE RIGHT HERE IN CANADA?! 🇨🇦🤯

Good morning, everyone, and welcome back to Canadian Veggie Grower! 💚

Today's Morning Featured Plant is one we've been especially excited to share… our very own PINEAPPLE! 🍍

What makes this little beauty so special?

We started it from the crown of a grocery-store pineapple, rooted it, planted it, and now we're watching our very own pineapple develop inside our tropical greenhouse in Angus, Ontario! 🌿🥰

Here are three fascinating facts!

🌺 One fruit, many flowers! A pineapple develops from an entire cluster of flowers that fuse together.

🌱 One main fruit per growing point! But the plant can produce pups that grow into new fruiting plants.

🍍 You can start your own! The leafy crown from a pineapple can be rooted and grown into another plant with patience and proper care.

There's something incredibly rewarding about growing something from what many people would simply throw away!

And this is exactly what we love teaching the next generation of gardeners a little curiosity, patience and care can lead to something amazing! 🌱💚

🌙🌴 DAY 144 AND THE JUNGLE STILL AMAZES ME! 💚

144 nights of checking in on our little tropical paradise here in Angus, Ontario! 🇨🇦

As the evenings get cooler and autumn continues outside, there's something incredibly peaceful about stepping into our warm greenhouse and being surrounded by tropical greenery. 🌿🥰

Tonight we're taking another relaxing stroll through the jungle!

🍍 Our pineapple continues its exciting journey toward becoming a homegrown fruit!

🌺 Our colourful tropical foliage brings so much life to the greenhouse!

🌱 And every new leaf reminds us why we started growing in the first place!

What began as a love for gardening has become a daily adventure, and sharing these moments with all of you makes it even more special. 💚

Whether you're growing one little houseplant or an entire garden, never underestimate the joy of watching something grow!

🌈🍁 AUTUMN COLOURS ALL YEAR LONG?!

Good morning, everyone, and welcome back to Canadian Veggie Grower! 🌴💚

Today's Morning Featured Plant is our gorgeous CROTON! 🌿

Just look at those incredible colours! Reds, yellows, oranges and greens, all growing together in our little tropical jungle here in Ontario, Canada! 🇨🇦

Here are some fascinating Croton facts!

🌈 Their leaves can develop different colours as they mature.

☀️ They love bright light, which helps bring out their vibrant foliage.

🌴 They're tropical evergreens, meaning they can keep those beautiful colours throughout the year!

😂 And here's the funny part… Crotons can be a little dramatic! Sudden changes in their environment can cause them to drop leaves!

⚠️ Their milky sap can also irritate skin, so gloves are a good idea when pruning.

Gardening is full of incredible surprises, and this colourful beauty is another reason we love growing tropical plants! 💚
