🌟 Bolt 🌟

This beautiful boy gave his owners quite the scare recently when he started behaving a little out of character - followed by several bouts of vomiting. When his owners noticed that Bolt had brought up some hair ties, they didn’t hesitate and brought him straight to our Yokine Hospital for a check‑over. 🏥

On examination, Bolt was showing signs of abdominal discomfort, which raised concerns that there may be more foreign material still inside his gastrointestinal tract. Abdominal radiographs confirmed our suspicions, revealing additional hair ties lodged in his stomach and small intestines. These were safely removed during surgery by our skilled surgical team. 🩺

We were so pleased with how well Bolt recovered following his operation, and we’re thrilled to share that he has continued to heal beautifully at home, back to enjoying life with his loving family. 🐾💞

A big well done to Bolt and his wonderful family - and a gentle reminder that curious kitties can sometimes mistake everyday items for snacks! 😻

🌟 Winter Safety - Heaters & Fireplaces 🌟

Household heaters may be comforting for pets but they can be dangerous. Not only are our furry friends at risk of overheating or burning their fur and skin, but they are in danger of smoke inhalation and carbon monoxide poisoning from both gas heaters and fireplaces. 🐱🔥

🔹Never leave your pet alone with a heater and ensure that you consistently monitor your pet’s exposure to the heater, including keeping a safe distance and limiting the exposure time.
🔹Install a fireguard screen around the fireplace. This will prevent burning and stop your pet from eating the ashes and ingesting any harmful toxins from fire starters.
🔹Check for gas leakages when using a gas fireplace or heater and to ensure the damper is kept open at all times for ventilation.
🔹Gas space heaters can be particularly dangerous to pets as they are unvented and need to be externally ventilated. Keep a window open and do not operate the heater for more than four hours at a time or in confined spaces like a bathroom or bedroom.
🔹Ensure that all games and toys remain away from household heaters.

🌟 Mason 🌟

This incredible boy recently spent some time in our Cannington Hospital after accidentally ingesting a topical heartworm treatment. Thanks to the swift action of his owners, Mason was quickly brought in so our team could begin treatment right away.

Mason received intensive supportive care, including IV fluids, anti‑emetics and medication to reduce his tremors. Unfortunately, he then developed aspiration pneumonia - a known complication associated with toxin ingestion - and required oxygen support to help him breathe comfortably.

Through it all, Mason showed just how strong he is. 🐶💪 A true fighter, he responded beautifully to treatment, was gradually weaned off oxygen, and recovered so well that he was able to head home.
We’re so happy to share that Mason has continued to improve and is now back where he belongs - enjoying life at home with his loving family. 💖
And if you look closely at Dr Jill’s smile, you can see just how proud and overjoyed she (and our entire team!) was to see this remarkable boy heading home.

✨ What is aspiration pneumonia❓ ✨

Aspiration pneumonia occurs when food, liquid, saliva or stomach contents accidentally enter the lungs instead of going down the oesophagus. This can happen when a pet’s normal swallowing or gag reflexes are reduced - such as during toxin ingestion, heavy sedation or severe illness. It can make breathing difficult and requires prompt veterinary care, monitoring and sometimes oxygen support to help the lungs heal.

Well done, Mason - you absolute legend. 🤩💞

🌟 FAQ: What information will you need from me when I arrive❓🌟

When you arrive at our emergency hospital, we know time matters—so here’s what we’ll typically ask for:

✅ Your pet’s name, age, breed & s*x
✅ A brief summary of the problem or symptoms
✅ When it started and any changes you’ve noticed
✅ Any medications, pre-existing conditions or recent treatments
✅ Your contact details

If your pet has eaten something unusual, please bring the packaging or a photo if you can 📦📸
The more details you can give us upfront, the faster we can help your pet.

We're here when you need us—day or night. 🌙❤️

🌟 Overnight Stays 🌙🌟

A good night’s sleep is an important part of healing. To help our patients rest and recover, our hospital lights are dimmed overnight to create a calm and comfortable environment.
Don’t worry - even while the lights are low, our patients continue to receive all their treatments, gentle walks, and of course plenty of extra cuddles from our caring team. 🥰

Gorgeous little Arnaud certainly made the most of the cosy vibes, enjoying his dinner with a touch of mood lighting. ✨
Because comfort, care and compassion matter around the clock. 💞

🌟 Ear Infections in Pets - Are They All The Same❓🌟

Did you know there are different types of ear infections in pets? Understanding them can make a big difference in your pet's comfort and health. 🐶🐱

🔵 Otitis Externa: Affects the outer ear canal - look for redness, swelling and discharge.
🔵 Otitis Media: Middle ear infection - can cause pain, hearing loss and balance issues.
🔵 Otitis Interna: The most serious - impacts the inner ear, often leading to coordination problems and potential hearing loss.

These infections can be caused by bacteria, yeast, ear mites or allergies.
Each type requires different care, so if your pet shows any symptoms, please seek veterinary attention.

🚨 When is it an emergency?
🔹Sudden head tilt or loss of balance
🔹Walking in circles or falling over
🔹Rapid eye flicking (nystagmus)
🔹Severe pain, crying or distress
🔹Vomiting alongside ear symptoms
🔹Swelling around the ear or face
🔹A sudden change in hearing or responsiveness

Ear infections can progress quickly, especially when the inner ear is involved. If something doesn’t feel right, it’s always safer to have your pet checked. Early treatment can prevent long-term complications.
