The countdown is officially on!

Our 2026 Mate's Gift Fundraising Tour kicks off on 28 September and we are very excited, very busy, and working away behind the scenes getting everything organised.

With plenty of willing hands joining us on the ground this year, we want to make every one of them count and reach as many animals as we possibly can.

So stay tuned, because we’ve got one last online auction coming very soon to give our funds a final boost before we go. Every extra dollar means more treatments, more supplies and more animals we can help while we’re there.

And now is the perfect time to have a rummage through the cupboards! If you have any unwanted, unused or expired flea and worm treatments, you can drop them into Hairy Hounds Playground and we’ll take them with us.
We’re also looking for unwanted prescription glasses, bras in good condition, and new or like new collars and leads.

As always, we’re incredibly grateful for the support you give Mate’s Gift. We genuinely couldn’t do what we do without you.

28 September… here we come!

Some dogs become part of another dog’s story in a way you never forget. River was that dog for Mate.

She was his best friend, his safe place and such a huge part of helping him settle into his new life. River’s mum Kylie was also one of Mate’s absolute favourite people, so together they gave him something really special when he needed it most.

Very sadly, River passed away suddenly yesterday.

We’re thinking so much of Kylie and River’s family, and we wanted to honour this beautiful girl for the part she played in Mate’s life.

Vale beautiful River. You were deeply loved, and we’ll always be grateful for what you gave our boy.

A lovely little delivery for Mate's Gift today.

A huge thank you to High Street Veterinary Clinic in East Kew for donating a bag of veterinary supplies for us to take over to Sumatra. These kinds of donations are incredibly useful to our team and the animals we’re helping, and we’re so grateful they thought of us.

And an equally big thank you to our little helper who reached out to the clinic, organised everything and collected it for us. It’s these quiet little acts behind the scenes that make such a difference.

Very grateful to have good people helping Mate’s Gift do what we do. ❤️

Getting ready for our upcoming clinics means a whole lot of preparation from booking the vets, sourcing medications, organising vaccination days, booking rooms and trucks for surgery and deliveries and so much more.

We’re currently putting together information to have printed in Sumatra to give to every owner whose dog or cat will be sterilised, so they know exactly what to expect before, during and after surgery.

From preparing their animal beforehand, to what happens on the day, through to keeping them safe, comfortable and properly cared for once they’re back home, we want owners to feel informed and confident about the entire process.

For most of the families, this may be the first time their animal has ever had surgery, so clear, simple information in their own language really matters.

These clinics aren’t just about sterilising as many animals as we can. They’re about doing it properly, supporting the people who love them, and making sure each dog and cat gets the best possible care before they arrive and long after they leave.

Another little piece of the preparation coming together for the September and October 2026 Mate's Gift Fundraising Tour.

Today, on International Dog Day, we celebrate every single one of them.

The dogs curled up safely on our couches. The dogs who have already found their people. The dogs living on the streets. The ones in shelters and rescues. And the ones, all over the world, who are still waiting for someone to show them that they matter.

Because they all do. Every dog deserves kindness. Every dog deserves safety. Every dog deserves food, care and compassion. And every dog deserves to know what it feels like to be loved.

So today, we hope everyone can do just one little thing for a dog.

Donate a bag of food. Support a local rescue. Sponsor a sterilisation or vaccination. Foster. Adopt. Fill a water bowl for a street dog. Give an old blanket to a shelter. Or simply give the dog beside you an extra cuddle and be grateful that they’re yours.

It doesn’t have to be something huge. Because when enough people do one small thing, it can mean everything to a dog who has very little.

Happy International Dog Day from all of us at Mate's Gift.

For every dog, everywhere.

26 more dogs vaccinated, and one of the first things we noticed from the photos was just how healthy so many of these dogs look.

But it was the response from the community that really gave Beni and Pirman a boost.

People came with their dogs, they were happy to have them vaccinated and genuinely grateful that someone was there helping them care for their animals.

That matters.

Beni and Pirman have put so much time into building trust within these communities and encouraging people to look after their dogs differently. Change doesn’t happen overnight, so seeing owners turn up and embrace what we’re doing is a pretty good feeling.

And now we have another 26 vaccinated dogs getting ready for our October sterilisation program.

A big thank you to Pipsqueaks Photography and Hairy Hounds Playground for making Mate's Gift the lucky recipient of their HOWL-o-ween photo shoot fundraiser.

A little update from the ground in North Sumatra today 💚

Beni and Pirman have been out in Kuala Unggas, another village close to Tangkahan, vaccinating dogs this morning and continuing again this afternoon.

And there was a familiar face waiting for them… Panda! 🐶

Panda was one of the dogs we sterilised last year, and just look at her now. Healthy, happy, with a beautiful coat and skin. She’s a wonderful example for her community of the difference sterilisation and ongoing care can make.

This is exactly what we want our program to be about. Not just arriving in a village, sterilising dogs and disappearing, but going back, building relationships with owners and continuing to help them care for their animals.

Vaccination. Sterilisation. Parasite control. Education. And most importantly, going back. 💚

Little by little, village by village, with our team on the ground, the support of the local communities and everyone who supports Mate’s Gift, together we can make lasting change for the dogs of North Sumatra

Don’t forget your cans and bottles can help our animals too!

If you’re in Melbourne, you can drop your eligible CDS cans and bottles into Hairy Hounds Playground and we’ll take care of the rest, or you can choose Mate's Gift as your donation partner through the CDS Vic app.

It might only be 10 cents at a time, but those cans and bottles trickle in and it really does add up.

The money helps us stay on top of the ongoing costs of having the dogs and cats in our programs checked and treated for parasite control, including fleas, ticks and worms.

It’s such a simple way to help without spending an extra cent, and every bottle and can genuinely contributes.

So don’t chuck them in the recycling bin. Save them for us!

Today on the ground in Tangkahan, another 15 dogs took an important step towards a healthier future.

These 15 cuties were vaccinated today in preparation for their sterilisation in October, with the Head Vet of North Sumatra very kindly coming out to Tangkahan to do the honours himself.

We’re incredibly grateful to him for giving us his time and supporting the work we’re doing in the area.

A huge thank you as well to our Mate's Gift team on the ground, Beni and Pirman, who keep this program moving when we’re not there. There’s a lot that happens behind the scenes to find the dogs, speak with owners, organise vaccinations and prepare everyone for sterilisation day, and we couldn’t do it without them.

And these 15 are just the beginning.

We’ll be sterilising many more dogs when we return to Tangkahan in October, continuing our work to reduce unwanted litters and improve the health and welfare of dogs in the community.

For now, check out some of the gorgeous faces who are officially on the October list. ❤️
