Trail Riding Tip

Got a horse that spooks or wants to rush past scary objects?

One of my favourite exercises is using a gentle counter flexion to help redirect your horse’s focus.

For example, if your horse is looking or spooking to the right, softly lift your left (outside) rein to ask for a slight bend to the left.

Allow the inside rein to soften just enough so your horse can bend, rather than pulling both reins evenly.

Hold the bend as you ride past the object, then release and reward once your horse relaxes and moves forward confidently.

Why does this work?

✔️ It gives your horse a job to focus on instead of locking onto the scary object.

✔️ It helps interrupt the look, spin or run” response before it escalates.

✔️ The gentle bend encourages the neck and body to soften, making it harder for the horse to brace and rush.

✔️ The release rewards relaxation and builds your horse’s confidence over time.

Remember, the goal isn’t to force your horse’s head around.

Use just enough bend to regain their attention while maintaining forward movement and balance.

Every trail ride is a training opportunity.

The more you help your horse feel safe and confident, the more they will trust you in new environments.

🐴 If you’d like help working through spooking, rushing, or trail riding confidence with your horse, send me a DM to book a one on one lesson.

I’d love to help you and your horse build confidence together.❤️

Wally is in for in home training with a clear goal to become a calmer, softer, and more responsive horse that his owner can confidently enjoy out on the trails.

We’re not just teaching behaviours; we’re building understanding.

Over the coming weeks we’ll be focusing on:

• Responding lightly to pressure
• Leading and following a feel
• Improving balance and posture
• Developing softness through the
body and mouth
• Building confidence and willingness.
• Creating a horse that is relaxed,
attentive, and enjoyable to ride.
• Building confidence being out alone

Every great trail horse starts with a solid foundation on the ground. When a horse understands the basics, everything under saddle becomes easier.

I’m looking forward to sharing Wally’s progress throughout his training journey. 🤍🐴

If you’d like your horse to benefit from an in home training program, I’d love to help.

Send me a DM to discuss your goals and book your horse in for training. 🐴
