On the 7th of July, Moorabool Highway Patrol members were patrolling the Western Freeway when they came across a recently deceased kangaroo on the edge of the road.

The members stopped and checked the pouch and to their surprise, located a joey alive inside.

With the prevalence of wildlife, especially kangaroos, collisions with wildlife do happen and unfortunately our native animals often come off second best.

But hitting an animal requires you to pull over, and if safe to do so, check if the animal is still alive, and provide assistance if required. You are legally obligated to report incidents involving domestic pets and livestock to the police or owner, and to call wildlife rescue if native wildlife is injured.

Thankfully, it was a happy ending for this little joey who was taken to the local Vet for assessment before being handed over to a wildlife sanctuary.

It’s freezing cold and pi***ng down rain, this means you won’t encounter any snakes, right? WRONG!

Unlike us, reptiles cannot self-regulate their core body temperature and thus rely on the external environment to do so. So, because reptiles cannot keep themselves warm during our cold winter, they are forced into a torpor like state known as BRUMATION.

In this state, the animal will find refuge in a dry microclimate, underneath or within deep burrows, fallen timber, large rocks, concrete slabs, debris, deep substrates (such as leaf litter) and other miscellaneous materials around the home. They could be anywhere that meets the requirements of being well protected from the elements and predators, and being warm enough not to freeze to death whilst also allowing their body to cool to levels that slow their metabolism to a halt.

But, sometimes these areas may get flooded out after heavy rains, which means the snakes will emerge to seek refuge elsewhere, which means that you may encounter them during this time.
