YOUR DOG DOESN’T NEED TO MATCH THE DOG NEXT DOOR

One dog happily greets everyone. Another prefers a little distance.

One enjoys a busy outing. Another is more comfortable on a familiar, quieter route.

For this weekend’s check, think about your dog’s usual patterns:
- How they choose to spend quiet time
- Which activities they willingly join
- How they interact with familiar people
- What their ordinary enthusiasm looks like

The aim isn’t to score them against someone else’s dog. It is to know their own baseline well enough to notice a meaningful change.

Avoid brushing off a new withdrawal or loss of interest as “just their personality”.
Record what has changed and seek veterinary advice when it is persistent, sudden or accompanied by other concerns.

Knowing your dog means recognising both who they are—and when something is different.

Breton Barn Thoughts: A Fair Comparison

ARE WE COMPARING THE SAME KIND OF DAY?

Monday’s ride was on firm ground after a quiet weekend.
Friday’s ride followed rain, a busy week and a change of paddock.

It is tempting to compare the two as though only the horse has changed.
When I hear, “They were better last time,” I want to understand what last time looked like.
The surface, workload, routine, company and surroundings all help tell the story. They don’t explain away discomfort, but they give observations useful context.

A few simple notes can help:
“Twenty-minute walk. Different track. Windy. Less settled than usual.”
No elaborate spreadsheet required. Unless you enjoy one—in which case, I respect your commitment.

A useful comparison starts with remembering the whole day, not just the difficult moment.

Booking Focus: You Don’t Need the Perfect Description
“I DON’T KNOW HOW TO EXPLAIN IT—THEY JUST SEEM DIFFERENT.”

You don’t need anatomical terms or a perfectly worded explanation before getting in touch.
Perhaps your horse feels less comfortable during a familiar routine. Perhaps your dog seems less settled after their usual activities. You know what is normal for your animal, even when describing the change is tricky.

When you enquire about a Breton Animal Wellness session, useful information includes:
- What you have noticed
- When it began
- Whether it happens consistently
- Any recent changes to work, routine or health
- Relevant veterinary advice or treatment

My role is to listen, assess within my scope and discuss whether bodywork is appropriate—not expect you to arrive with a diagnosis.
New pain, lameness, illness or a sudden change needs veterinary assessment first. Bodywork belongs alongside appropriate veterinary care, not in its place.

To enquire about a horse or dog session in Gippsland, message Breton Animal Wellness. We can start with what you’ve noticed.

Since I have had my stroke this is one of the side affects I have and its not like I am no longer intelligent, my brain has been scrambled and needs time to find the right word. I know my muscles and horse stuff but sometimes those words get lost.
What you can do?
Give me time to think? Make a suggestion? Or help me to remember.

“I LIKED THE OTHER BRUSH BETTER.”

We often choose grooming brushes according to the job: remove mud, lift loose coat, finish with a shine.

Your horse may have a different selection process.

A brush they accept over the shoulder might be unwelcome around the belly. The pressure they enjoy one day may not suit them the next.
During ordinary grooming, notice whether they remain settled, move away, tighten their expression or become increasingly restless.

Try a softer brush, lighter pressure or a different area—and notice whether their response changes. Keep yourself safely positioned rather than following them around with the brush.

A repeated or new sensitivity deserves attention, not simply a firmer grip on the lead rope.

Grooming isn’t only something we do to a horse. It can be a conversation with them.

Dog Wellbeing: Rest Without Interruption

Your dog might spend plenty of time at home—but how much of that time is genuinely undisturbed?

Between visitors, children, other animals and us stopping for “just one little cuddle”, a quiet afternoon can become surprisingly busy.

Give your dog somewhere comfortable where they can choose to step away and rest without being followed.

That might mean letting the sleeping dog sleep, asking visitors to leave them settled, or keeping an enthusiastic younger animal from repeatedly interrupting.
They can love your company and still need a break from it.
Sometimes supporting wellbeing means adding something. Sometimes it means letting nothing happen for a while.

An Important Update from Breton Animal Wellness

Session Price Adjustment – Effective 1 November 2026

After five years without a price increase, I've made the difficult decision to increase my session fees by $10 per session, effective 1 November.

Over the years, I've worked hard to absorb rising business expenses, particularly fuel and travel costs, without passing them on to my clients.

Unfortunately, these costs haven't eased, and with the distances I travel throughout Gippsland to care for your horses and dogs, it has become increasingly difficult to continue absorbing them.

The $10 increase won't cover the additional costs, but it will help contribute towards them while allowing me to continue providing the same dedicated, personalised care.

Please note: Clients who currently have a negotiated rate for multiple horses will not be affected by this increase. Your existing arrangements will remain unchanged.

I genuinely appreciate the loyalty, understanding and support you've shown me over the years. Being trusted to work with your much-loved animals is something I never take for granted.

Thank you for continuing to support my small local business and allowing me to do what I love.

Unofficial Animal Translation Guide

Horse:
“I can hear a feed bucket being touched three paddocks away.”

Dog:
“I wasn’t asleep. I was waiting for someone to enter the kitchen.”

Human:
“I’ll quickly finish this job before dark.”

Horse and dog:
“We admire your optimism.”

Living with animals teaches us many things—although accurate time management may not be one of them.

Horse Wellness Check: Watch the Turn at the Gate

Gates often create tight turns that we barely notice.

Your horse may need to slow down, shift their weight and organise their feet while also watching the gate, handler and surrounding horses.

During ordinary handling, notice whether they:
- Rush through and swing around
- Take several small, hurried steps
- Consistently turn in one direction
- Step on their own feet
- Drift into your space
- Brace through the neck
- Turn more smoothly when given additional room

Gate behaviour is influenced by training, anticipation, footing, nearby horses and the amount of space available. One untidy turn doesn’t prove there is a physical problem.

Rather than repeatedly testing the movement, simply give your horse enough room and observe what happens during the normal routine.
Sometimes an everyday corner tells us more than a carefully planned exercise.
