Our newest little barnyard babies are here and already keeping the brooder busy with zoomies, naps, and tiny cheeps 🥹

These chicks are a beautiful mix from our free-ranging flock, bred from happy, healthy birds raised right here on our acre property. With our Rhode Island Red rooster over a mixed flock including Light Sussex, Silver Laced Wyandottes, Plymouth Rocks, Australorps and more, every hatch brings its own gorgeous surprise in colour and pattern ✨

✨ New face on the farm ✨

Meet Bud 🐓
Our handsome 6-month-old Speckled Sussex rooster.

He somehow went from “buddy” to just Bud… and the name stuck 🤎

Bud is an absolute sweetheart — friendly, curious, and a total little sook who loves being around people. He’s got the most beautiful colouring and so much personality packed into one rooster.

The only downside? Him and Gus have decided they are definitely not going to be best friends anytime soon 😂

We’re very excited to have this gorgeous boy here at Greenacre Poultry and can’t wait to watch him grow out. 🐣

Cleaning and disinfecting the brooder ready for my first hatch of the season 🙌🏼🐣

There’s so much work that happens behind the scenes before baby chicks even arrive.

Every season starts with a full deep clean — scrubbing everything down with disinfectant, rinsing, and leaving the brooder out in the sun to dry properly for several days before any babies go inside.

Healthy chicks start with a clean environment, and I do everything I can to give them the best possible start in life 🤍

It’s definitely not the glamorous side of hatching season… but it’s one of the most important parts.

Keeping your Chickens safe from Snakes 🐍

Just a brief reminder that snakes are more active during this time of year, and if you keep chickens, you may anticipate a visit from them in your coops.

What measures can you take to prevent snakes?

• Ensure your overnight coop is snake-proof.
• Remove eggs from nests daily (unless you have a broody hen, of course). Snakes love a quick snack!
• Ensure your little chickens are completely secure in a brooder or inside, away from harm, overnight.
• Close your coop early! We have had a snake visitor a few times simply because we were late to close the coop.
• If you have an overnight area for your chickens, do not keep water in there unless they are locked in for an extended period.
• Keep your chicken food in rodent-proof containers to prevent rats, which in turn attract snakes.

Snakes are more active in warmer months, searching for food, water, or a mate.

What should you do if you encounter a snake in your coop?

• Ensure your chickens are safe; remove them from the coop if safe to do so.
• Do not assume you know the type of snake; call a professional snake catcher to remove the snake. In North Queensland, we have a high incidence of venomous snakes.
• If the snake is small and poses no threat to your chickens, leave it be; it will move on by itself.
• Do not attempt to relocate or kill a snake; it is illegal.

At the end of the day, snakes are an inherent part of living in Australia, and they need to eat and live as well. If you keep chickens, expect snakes!
