A look at one of my curly roosters, this one is Oz Sandy. I'm in Australia, and as far as I know, curly isn't available outside Australia. The curly gene is probably widespread throughout Australia, but I'm probably one of the few people to recognise what it is and how to get more.

Ive got two pens with curly roosters, and I'll start collecting eggs from the hens in the next month or two.

All chicks will be hetero curly, and the hens will be mated back to their father. Each of the chicks from THAT mating will have a 50% chance of being homozygous curly.

A couple of things about the curly gene:
1. It is autosomal recessive.
2. It is not the same as the frizzle gene in chickens, which is autosomal incomplete dominant.
3. Breeding curly to curly does not impact the birds health or appearance as the frizzle gene does in chickens.

My Curly chick. I believe it may just be a hen, too. It's also awfully light for wildtype, but that's probably just the lighting. Parents are homo curly, het Oz Snowy, and homo curly, homoOz Snowy.

It's difficult to see in the photos, but the tips of the feathers are curled upwards. This should be more apparent in another week.

Location: Australia.

This is my breeding pair of curly Japanese quail, and my first intentional curly hatch. I'll be taking progress photos of this one every day or so to document the plumage as it grows out. I NEEED this one to be a hen!

I've had Oz Snowy for a while now, and more recently I discovered the curly gene in my flock.

Here's a look at some of my birds. I've included pics of a homo Oz Snowy/homo curly hen, a het Oz Snowy/homo curly rooster, as well as a het Oz Snowy/homo curly chick. Next year, I hope to have curly eggs and chicks available.

Oz Snowy fawn are, in my opinion, the prettiest, but I've noticed significant chick mortality in the first few days post hatching. I don't know yet if I'll be breeding them for sale.

Also, as of today, Oz Snowy is officially in public hands in the US.

Angel hatched five, we sold one. Sometimes she has four, Sometimes she has none.
White Head hatched eight. Sometimes she has ten. Sometimes she has one.
The black pied hatched 17. We sold one. Sometimes she has five. Sometimes she has 25.

That should mean we have 28 duckies (we do). But NO ONE knows which duckies belong to which mumma.

I've got two cages of quail that I've basically been getting no eggs from for the last month or so because they've been eating the eggs.

Last week I switched them to regular layer pellets for chooks. Previously, I was getting about 18 eggs a day. Since I switched feed, I've been getting more eggs each day. Today I got 30 eggs.

A chicken egg at day nine of incubation. Both mother and father are heterozygous naked necks.
