🐶Let’s talk about the “Paws off the floor” stage of puppyhood 🐾✨
That in-between time before full vaccinations can feel a little frustrating… you’ve brought home your beautiful new puppy and you just want to show them the world! The good news? Socialisation doesn’t have to stop — it just needs to be done safely.👏
During this stage, the goal is positive exposure without public ground contact. Your puppy is soaking up the world like a sponge, and these experiences help shape a confident, calm adult dog.🐕🦺
Here are some fun (and safe!) adventures you can enjoy together:
🚗 Car rides:
Short trips are perfect for building confidence. Drive through busy streets, school zones, drive-throughs, or pick-up spots so your puppy can experience new sights, sounds and movement.
🛒 Trips to the shops: (Hello Bunnings!) Pop your puppy in a pram, trolley, carrier or sling and head out for errands. They’ll see trolleys, hear music, meet friendly strangers and experience new environments safely.
☕ Cafe dates: Carry your puppy or keep them in a pram or carrier while you enjoy a coffee. This is a fantastic way to expose them to people, noises, smells and the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
👋 Meet and greet sessions
Invite vaccinated friends and family over for gentle puppy cuddles. Different ages, voices and appearances help puppies learn that humans are wonderful.
🏠 Home confidence building
Vacuum cleaners, doorbells, umbrellas, hair dryers, different floor textures… introduce everyday household experiences in a positive, calm way.
🌎 People watching adventures
Sit on a park bench with your puppy safely in your arms and watch the world go by. Bikes, prams, kids, joggers — all amazing exposure moments!
✅This stage is crucial for socialisation, and every safe outing builds resilience and confidence. By the time those paws can finally hit the ground, your puppy will already feel like a seasoned explorer 🐩😁
🤗Remember: paws off the floor doesn’t mean life on pause. It’s the beginning of your puppy’s big, exciting world! 🐶✨
