The dog you meet on day one may look a little different a few weeks later.

A new home comes with a lot to take in, particularly for a dog coming from a shelter, foster home or another big life change.

Give them time to settle and get to know the dog in front of you rather than expecting everything to fall into place immediately. 💛

Bringing a dog home can be exciting, but settling into a new home is a big adjustment too.

Some dogs settle quickly. Others need more time, space and support — and that’s okay.

Keeping the first few weeks calm and predictable can give you both time to learn about each other. đŸ¶

Save this for the first few weeks with your new dog, or send it to someone who’s recently adopted.

Sometimes being a dog owner involves knowing when you need an extra pair of hands.

Maybe you need a trainer for a behaviour you’re struggling with, a groomer who understands your dog, or somewhere they can spend the day while you’re at work.

PuppyPal’s local services directory is there to make that search a little easier.

Ever had a dog suddenly “forget” everything they know the second you leave the house? 😅

Dogs don’t always generalise skills as easily as we expect. More distractions can make a familiar behaviour much harder.

Try lowering the difficulty, giving them a little more space, or practising somewhere calmer first.

Save this for the next time your dog seems to have selective hearing. đŸ¶

Ever asked your dog to sit at home and thought, “Wow, we’ve nailed this”
only for that same cue to disappear the second you get to the park? 😂

Dogs can find familiar skills much harder when the environment changes.

At home, there may be very little competing for their attention. Outside, they’re taking in smells, movement, other dogs, people and sounds all at once.

That’s why practising a skill in different places and gradually adding distractions can be such an important part of training.

What’s one thing your dog does perfectly at home but suddenly “forgets” outside? 👀

Border Collies are often described as highly intelligent, but living with one is about much more than teaching them an impressive list of tricks.

They were developed to work closely with people, monitor movement and make quick decisions. In everyday life, those natural traits may show up as intense focus, sensitivity to their surroundings, chasing, circling or trying to organise people and other animals.

They often thrive with regular movement, problem-solving activities and training that gives their busy minds somewhere to go. Just as importantly, they may need support learning that they don’t always have to be working.

Breed traits can help you understand certain behaviours, but every Border Collie will still have their own personality, preferences and needs.

Do you share your life with a Border Collie? What trait describes yours best?

The front door can be a lot for dogs.

There’s a knock, unfamiliar voices, movement through the house and pressure to say hello while everyone is excited.

Your dog may find it easier to settle in another room, behind a gate or with something calming to do while your guest comes inside.

Once the house feels quieter, you can decide whether your dog is ready to join. Some dogs may prefer not to interact at all, and that’s okay too.

A successful visit doesn’t have to begin with an immediate greeting.
